Right, they lightened them up. It still should not corrode.

My first truck had the rails installed when I sprayed it. I never did like the look of the rails after that even though it did not matter as far as function.

LOL. I read the Super Duty's bed has 25% more Bud Light cans than the F150's do.

My dealer did a demo to prove that theory wrong. The beds don't get holes punched in them as easy as they show on TV. They also showed how they push the tool box in the Chevy bed on a different angle. Anything to try to beat the BOSS!

2) in Mass (and maybe other states but I'm not sure), I would have had to register an F350 as a Commercial vehicle and that has some hidden costs (more frequent registry renewals, insurance impact, etc) plus I'd have to be DOT compliant, though that's not too big a deal.

3) Payload and towing #'s - the F350 I looked at had 3504# of available payload whereas the F250 I'm getting was just shy of #3000 and was good to handle a 15,400# in a 5th wheel/gooseneck configuration.

Short of a toy hauler, I don't see my next trailer being so big that this truck can't handle it, and so went with ride comfort as the deciding factor.

We also snowmobile and so we spend 5-6 hrs in the truck each way to NH or ME nearly every weekend in the winter, so...did I mention ride quality? lol
Nice looking truck! Congratulations! How did you find an F250 diesel with almost 3000 lbs of useful load? When I was shopping for mine the most useful load I could find was 2200 lbs. that's why I went with the gasser instead. The truck I have is great and does an excellent job for what I tow but I sure wanted the diesel.

Funny you ask, because this was a panic attack moment for me at the dealership. As I was going to sign papers I said "hold up, I have to go check the door stickers", and I did...and it said it had UNDER 2000# of payload left over!

I told the sales guy sorry but if that's right (and I couldn't believe that it was), then I can't buy this after all. Heck my current 2500HD had 2807# of payload available.

So he got one of the guys out back to talk to me, and he pulled out the actual shipping weight of the truck (7003#) and minus the GVWR of 10K# that leaves it with almost 3000# left over. The only conclusion I can draw from that is that the sticker on the door is wrong.

That or GVWR - TRUCK ACTUAL WEIGHT doesn't equal remaining payload, but how else would you calculate it? And does it mean Ford is putting incorrect stickers on all their trucks?

Now...I realize doing it that way means I have to account for me as the driver plus whatever fluids it didn't ship with (a full tank of fuel would be all I'm assuming), but that should still leave me around the same # that my 2500HD had.

One of the first things I'm going to do is drive the truck to a scale house. Gotta know my real #'s here.

This is interesting. I'm in the market of moving from an F150 to an F250 and I found a truck I liked but when I looked at the payload it read 2170# and I looked at the options and it didn't appear to be almost 900#'s worth so I'm at a lost. I'm still debating on this purchase as these trucks are $$$ but I've heard so many good things about the 6.7 diesel - that it would last 300-400k if I take care of it. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

I got the Lariat. Thankfully there wasn't a Platinum on the lot or I'd have had a much harder decision lol

So if I read this right, I should have 2660# of payload as I'm assuming that chart accounts for at least a full tank of fuel.

In my specific case:
10,000# GVWR - 7023# ship weight = 2977#
35 Gal of Diesel @ 7.5#/gal = 262.5#
2977 - 262 = 2715# left over for payload (driver weight not included)

So that's within 55# of what that Ford info said.

The door sticker said I had a little over 1900# of payload, so where did ~800# of weight disappear to??

Suggest anyone in the market for a truck request the dealer show you the shipping manifest to see the actual weight!

As I believe you have discovered, fords payload rating on the f250 is very skewed. If you bought the exact truck but in a 350 version, you would get an additional 1500 pounds of capacity. Similarly, Ford offers a derated F350 with a GVWR of 10k. All of this is for registration purposes for those states that require commercial registration on vehicles over 10k gvwr

My personal thoughts are you have much more capacity than the sticker or your above calculations. Of course I have no real expertise on the matter other than doing a lot of my own research when I owned an F250

I can only come to the same conclusion. I want to be within the #'s but if the manufacturers are fudging them then I've little choice but to trust the truck can handle well more than it says it can (and I've little doubt it can, this thing is a beast!)

Will be interesting to see what your scaled weight is. Mine is an older 2015 but my door sticker is correct or very close to it after scaling it.

Although we have a newer 2016 Ford Edge which I don't believe the door sticker on. I think it is very underestimated.

Cheers

I can't speak to Ford, but, my Dodge surprised me. Door sticker said I had 2200lb capacity (9000 GVWR, 6800lb weight). I have a heavy hitch (slider with bedsaver, about 150lb). When I took it to the scales with me, wife and full tank of fuel it was 7400lb.

Does the door sticker reflect weight with full tank and does shipping weight correspond to empty fuel tank? Don't know.

37gal of diesel is what, 300lb or so?

Just an update that with help from a buddy of mine I was able to get the rails in place and my Reese hitch is now installed. Hooked it up last night to the camper w/o issue and did a quick drive around town. It was only a few miles, but that was enough to notice how awesome diesel power is.

Even though the F250 sits 2" higher (at least) at the tailgate, everything hitched up fine. I am still a little bit nose high but no different than when I was hooked up to my GMC 2500HD, much to my surprise.

Rail clearance is arguably tight at 5" at the nose and about 4.5" at the tailgate. The pitch of my driveway onto the street happens to be a good test of angles and I had no issues with the cap and rail making contact so I'm going to leave well enough alone for now.

Come spring I'll have to give serious thought to lowering the camper axles (along with hub re-greasing, break checks etc. which will all be due) to the lower holes. That should get me nearly level and equal bed rail clearance, plus give me the option to raise the hitch up one hole w/o making it more nose high than it is now.

The only real drawback of doing that is the outside kitchen (which is already pretty high for my 5' nothing DW) would be even higher.

I still need to get to the scales to see what the real deal is with the weight and payload.

Just wait till that first long trip.... Quiet and relaxed at low RPM. My truck pulling the trailer is more quiet than my wife's Nissan Murano at 65-70mph.

Weight doesn't include any accessories like bed liner, tonneau cover, hitch, steps, or anything inside the cab like tow rope, etc. Should include full tank of fuel though.
