CAT Scale weights - Tundra and 26BH

My son and I decided to hit the nearest CAT scale and weight the truck and camper just to see where we are. Truck is loaded with simulated passenger weight, 1 row of firewood (good for 3 or 4 days), a small refrigerator, a mountain bike, 20# propane tank and a small grill and lastly a small floor jack. The camper is loaded for a weekend trip. 90 gallons fresh water plus a normal load of food, clothing and all the gear that normally stays in it. I did not have the other 2 bikes on. They either go on the rear of the camper or front of the truck as I now have a front receiver mount.

First weigh: Truck alone

Next is with No WDH:

Great data to have based on your "loaded" TV/TT combination!

Just a cursory look at the documents tells us:

* TT gross weight .............. 6,880lbs (TT GVWR 7,500lbs)
* TT tongue weight ............ 1,080lbs (15% -16% of TT gross)
* WDH should be rated at 1,000lbs minimum (1,200lb would be ideal).
* TV loaded "hitched" weight ............... 8,060lbs (TV GVWR ????)
* WDH adjusted pretty close (80lbs shy @ TV front axle, depending on Tundra specified WDH requirements).

I'm sure you will compare the CAT data to your other TV & TT weight specifications (GCWR, Axles, etc.).

Thanks. Yeah it is pretty close except I am over on the drive axle. My truck is rated 7100# gross and 4000# front axle, 4150# rear axle. We tend to load quite heavy unless we are traveling more than an hour and a half, then we fill with water at the campground. Maybe I should try to fill once there on every trip.

What was the cost on weighing in at the CAT scale?

Just curious...

CAT scales normally charge about $9 for your first pass, and a couple bucks for each additional pass.

Your 90 gallons of water adds about 750lbs to your TT weight, and 112lbs of that weight is part of your tongue weight (based on 15%).

TV GVWR: (8,060lbs TV Hitched Gross/CAT) - (7,100lb TV GVWR) = 960lbs over

If your fresh water tank is located to the front of the TT axles, a full tank of water will add tongue weight quickly which in turn adds weight to the TV. I normally travel with just a couple gallons of water for those on-road needs should they arise, then fill the fresh water tank near/at the CG.

Ideally you want your loaded tongue weight for the 26BH to be 13% to 15% of the TT's gross weight, and your presently at 15% to 16%. Relocating some of your TT's cargo resulting in a 13% loaded tongue weight would also help, just don't drop blow 13%.

If possible, reducing some of the TV's cargo would help as well.

Just food for thought.

Thanks Bob. One of the fresh water tanks is located ahead of the front axle while the other is over the front axle. We also carry the heavy cast iron and all the hoses as well as 2 folding rocker chairs in the front compartment. Was thinking of trying to re-organize. Not sure about loading the truck less...we a lot of the times travel with 2 large rows of firewood in the back once summer hits because of the longer trips we take. The truck handles the weight fine and I really would not have thought I was overweight unless I went to the scale. Might have to check with Toyota and see if I can increase the overall GVWR with an increase in rear axle rating. Not sure what the Tundra has for max payload capacity. I will probably go back and re-weigh with the bikes on the front of the truck and minimal fresh water. It is kind of cool know exactly where I am when heading down the road!

As for cost, this place was $10 first weigh and $2 each subsequent weigh.

Nice job at the scales.

I really wish manufactures would release data on how they test to put weight limits on vehicles. By all accounts, the Tundra is built to haul more than the rating. It has the rear end of a 1 ton truck, and same frame construction. Even with the new tow standard, we know what the test are, but don't know where the vehicle falls short in the test to get the rating that's on the sticker.

I am curious if its because of taxes. I know some places now are requiring these to be registered as a commercial vehicle because of the weight. The Tundra breaks that by just a couple of hundred pounds. Could a tow rating make it more costly to sell a vehicle?
