CAT Scales 24RBS

Got to the CAT Scales this week. I hit the scales on the way to campground and made an adjustment while camping. Returned to CAT Scales on way home today.
2016 Toyota Tundra Max Payload, Max Towing
Max. Towing rating 10,500
Max. Payload 2,060

Initial WDH setup was TT 1" nose down and spring bars adjusted to bring TV front wheel well height within 1/2" of TV without TT attached.

Initial scales weights:
TV + TT WDH Engaged
Steer Axle = 3,300
Drive Axle = 3,800
Trailer Axle = 5,240

TV + TT WDH Disengaged
Steer Axle = 3,160
Drive Axle = 4,000
Trailer Axle = 5,220

TV
Steer Axle = 3,520
Drive Axle = 2,900

Conclusions:
Steering axle light by 220lbs (3,520-3,300=220)
Tongue Weight 740 or 12.4% of 5,960 (7,160-6,420=740)
TT weight = (3,160+4,000+5220) - (3,520 + 2,900) = 5,960

Next Step:
1. Raise hitch ball 1" and make TT level
2. Raise L-brackets on Spring bar 1" to account for change of 1" on hitch ball height and target adding additional weight back to front Axle of TV

Next Re-weigh WDH Engaged
Steering Axle = 3,480
Drive Axle = 3,440
Trailer Axle = 5,340

Next Re-Weight WDH Disengaged
Steering Axle = 3,240
Drive Axle = 3,840
Trailer Axle = 5,200

Conclusions:
TV Steering axle within 40lbs of target w/o TT (3,520-3,480=40)
Tongue Weight 660 or 11.2% of 5,860 (7,080-6,420=660)
TT weight = (3,240+3,840+5200) - (3,520 + 2,900) = 5,860

Will stay at this last setting. Front axle weight of TV is at target.
Front pass through will likely get addition weight added over time with odd and ends. This will drive my tongue weight towards 12%.
TT GVWR is 7,500 so at ~5,920 TT has capacity to add additional cargo if needed.
Towing and handling was not night and day difference between adjustments, but I feel better with final adjustment.

Best regards,
Doug

Doug,

Great job "dialing in" your TV/TT combination. Didn't check your math because I figured this wasn't your first rodeo!

Thanks Bob. That's a compliment coming from you :-)
I listened to you guys all these years. Hopefully setting a good example.
CAT Scales isn't the funnest of activities, but certainly beats the heck out of guessing. The scales don't lie and I don't second guess myself.

Best regards,
Doug

My Toyota Sequoia manual said to have 9% to 11% tongue weight when using wdh. On pickup truck must be different since more weight of the empty truck is on front axle. Definitely have a level trailer, IMHO is better.

Lost weight...?

Doug,

Totaling up your rig weights there seems to be some lost weight - surely too small to worry about. First weigh was 12,380# disengaged, 12,340# engaged = 40# lost. Second weigh was 12,280# disengaged, 12,260# engaged = 20# lost.

Regarding the overall weight reduction between weigh-ins - assume that was the consumption of beer on your camping trip?

I hope to get my rig to it's first weigh-in in a couple of weeks.

Yes Lee,
I assumed consumables and scale accuracy as well lol.
That's a good point to keep in mind though. I always thought if I was within 40-50lbs I was good.

My gross weights on 1st day between weight #1 and Weight #2 was 12,380 - 12,340 = 40

40/12380 = 0.32%

My gross weights on 4th day was 12,280 - 12,260 = 20
20/12,280 = 0.16%

Thanks, Doug

Your correct, CAT scales are certified to be plus/minus 40lbs.
