Cummins 5.9

What would be considered "high" mileage for this diesel engine?

During some research.....I came across a B50 life of 350K miles.
No idea what B50 means.

Found this online...
B50 Life
'The expected engine life, measured in miles of operation, before 50 percent of all engines in operation will require major repair(s), overhaul, or replacement.
Example: The 5.9L Cummins has a B50 life of 350,000 miles. Therefore, half of the engines in operation can be expected to require an overhaul at/near 350,000 miles.'

I have a 94 215 horse 5.9 swapped into a Chevy- has 400k+ and still going strong. All it's ever had is a new turbo .... and some turns of a few screws and some grinding on the fuel plate

My '97 5.9 had 360,000 with no problems. Just have it checked by a good diesel mechanic. Front suspension is to be carefully checked.

I have read where there are issues with the front ball joints? It was a recall item if I recall.
And the particular truck that has my interest, has had 2 pinion seal issues, as reported on CarFax.
98K miles.....2006....4x4 quad cab...
Dealer is quite proud of it......$29995.
We have been emailing back and forth and sales manager says..
"Car Guru tells us what to price it as, based on a high volume location....we do negotiate a bit, but not what your asking".
I offered 26K

My current 07 5.9l has approximately 119K. Our 04.5 plow truck sits at 340K and still going strong.

I've replaced head gaskets on several high mileage 5.9's (500+K) and the cross hatch can still be seen on the cylinders. Amazing engines. As you have seen, the pre emissions 07 and earlier trucks demand top dollar.

Apparently demanding top dollar is costing the dealer money! 420 days on the lot? Dealer must me wealthy so he/she doesn't care if it sells.

For me, looking at what nice condition low mileage diesels go for, it made way more sense to order a brand new one! I test drove brand new Cummins truck that were cheaper than most new 1/2 tons on the lot. Granted they were Tradesman trucks but still crew cab 4x4's for $46k brand new! My Big Horn packaged Cummins was only $8k more after rebates!

A properly cared for 5.9 Cummins will last a very long time. It is a medium duty diesel in a light duty truck. Ford and Dmax are light duty. Just keep in mind that the rest of the components have a shorter life expectancy.
