Def

Ordered a diesel pick up today, as I’m over researching it, where to you typically purchase your DEF?

Thanks

X2 on the 2.5 gal boxes. You can also use truck stop pump DEF if there is availability in your area. It is usually cheaper than the boxes.

I've mostly used the Walmart brand in my last 3 trucks and never had an issue. I do have a refractometer from Amazon that tests DEF, anti-freeze, etc. which I use before pouring a jug in just to be sure it is ok. Never found one that wasn't but I'm a little OCD in that department. I've also used the boxed brands which are a little more expensive but not enough to make much difference. You can also find it at the pumps of some truck stops. Just put the nozzle in and pump it, after your credit card is approved, of course.

Urea is urea. I can't see paying $5 to $9 more for urea. Main thing is looking at the expiration date. Can someone detail the difference between Walmart's brand and the "Platinum" stuff.

I also buy the 2.5 gal box-o-def usually from an auto parts store or Walmart. I don’t track my usage carefully but I seem to get about 1000 mi/gal.

I purchased DEF once from a truck stop. Bare in mind the GPM from those truck stop pumps are off the charts. Having said that I probably wore a half gallon of DEF Not a pleasant situation.

FYI, make sure you clean the opening for the DEF tank well before filling. I work for a Heavy truck dealer and one of the biggest issues we see when trucks de-rate is that there is a screen in the pickup assembly of the DEF tank that is a very fine mesh that gets plugged. This is not considered a warrantable failure, so it is customer pay for the parts, labor and tow bill.

Just remember: green cap is diesel. Blue cap is DEF. Never confuse the two!!

Any certified DEF is fine. So, the cheapest brand at Walmart. Paying more for the Blue DEF brand is silly. You can also get DEF at some larger fuel stations that cater to larger trucks. Anything south of $2.70/gal is worth getting.

There are many threads here (and elsewhere) on DEF and I've never heard any advice to the contrary. DEF is DEF. Get the one that's cheapest.

Def

I have also moved from Blue Def to the Walmart brand for up to half the price. Been using it for the last 10k miles, no issue.

It’s also less money than some truck stops sell def at a pump.

I would be too, until I wasn't [emoji1787]

They have definitely come a long way with gassers, but they have with diesels too. It's one of those things where if your happy, don't go "try out" one of the others.

x2 on the "urea is urea" comment. An SCR system works by injecting DEF into the exhaust stream as it runs. DEF is 32.5% urea, or aqueous ammonia solution, and 67.5% deionized water. There are not different grades of urea and there are not different grades of DI water. It's marketing. One day we will all agree that humans are not wrecking the world with emissions...the governments are doing that for us with policies and our tax dollars. I delete all the superfluous nonsense on my trucks. I believe that burning twice the fuel to clean my DPF doesn't help us...and it doesn't help my engine life or my wallet.

You didn't see anything...nothing to see here folks. I'm just one guy with one opinion.

DEF usage, age, and purity

Wal Mart or Tractor Supply. As long as it's certified API and or ISO 22241 and it's fresh, under 2 years old.
If you tow you will use more DEF.
--------------------

Typically, dose rates for a well-maintained heavy- or medium-duty truck engine will be between 2-3%. This means that a truck getting six mpg will require between three to five gallons of DEF for every 1,000 miles it travels.

------There are different grades of urea but not different grades of DEF-----

    • Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) must have a urea concentration of 32.5% by weight. This concentration was chosen because it is has the lowest freezing temperature, 12°F.
    • The maximum level of impurities such as calcium and various metals such as iron, copper, zinc and aluminum are clearly specified. These limits are extremely low, to ensure reliable operation of the SCR system.
This definition excludes the use of urea grades used in agriculture, and requires water purified by distillation or deionization or similar.

There is no magic to DEF.. DEF consists of two ingredients, urea and deionized water. All manufactures pretty much use the same recipe. You can pay $13 a jug for a fancy name or you can pay $6 for a Walmart brand. It's the same stuff.. Just don't buy a lot and store it. It goes bad over time. When i'm on the road, i'll keep two jugs with me as when towing you'll burn through it faster.

There's always someone who just has to try to hijack the thread into a gas vs diesel thread. It's just an innocuous DEF question. Sheesh.
