Diesel Fuel and Additives

About to take delivery of my F350 Lariat with the 6.7 PSD and want to treat it right. Did a quick search and didn’t find it but I am not the best at searching subjects. I know fresh, clean fuel is a big issue and I always try and get my fuel at a station that seems to turn their diesel over quickly. Considering an additive to protect my investment and I am curious as to what folks use and how it works for them. Thought to tell if anything really works but I am putting out there. I certainly see a lot of adds for them and it seems to makes sense with the variability in diesel fuel quality and age.

Power Service and when I can get it I would prefer Opti-Lube.

A new 6.7 PSD doesn't need any kind of fuel treatment. If you do decide to use one, use Ford's PM-22-A Cetane Booster.

I know little about Fords but if you’re new truck has a CP4 pulling fuel to the engine and most all diesels did even with the new engines . You probably need some additive that helps lube the engine/injectors and Optilube is one that is oft recommended.

US low sulfur fuel is also low on lube needed in diesel engines. There are a number of suits going now concerning the short life of CP4s/injectors and low sulfur fuel.

ULSD in itself is horrible fuel...for any diesel. But I have to say, I haven't sold an injector on a newer 6.7 in years. Another fellow sold one #7 6.7 injector in October, that's it. No sales for the last 12 months for cylinders 3,4,5,6. Last 6.7 HPOP sold was in Sept. 2020. I wouldn't say there's a problem with ULSD and Ford's CP4. I've heard of several cases but it's not an epidemic. The biggest problem with the 6.7 right now is the DEF system. That's all I work with is diesels on a daily basis. Big sellers for the newer diesels? Transmission valve bodies & trans fluid pumps. Sold 62 valve bodies and
120 trans pumps in 2021.

Just to add, I haven't done a Cummins injector in quite some time also. Probably 2-3 years or more. It seems like once everyone figuted out the required filtration to keep them happy, the failure rate drastically dropped.

With that said, unless you have a specific need, algae, anti-gel, etc., you probably have no actual need for any additives at this point.

X2
We use it for anti-gel, as we never know what kind of fuel we are really getting in the fall / winter. Once you have experienced a gelled fuel system, you won't forget it.

Thanks all. Appreciate the information. I plan to drain water often just in case but there is so much conflicting information on additives out there. This is a huge investment , $10,000 price for the PSD option alone, and I want it to last for the remainder of my rv adventures!

The money I know for a fact you're spending on it, you better not need an additive!

I have also not heard of issues with Ford's CP4. Ram, for sure. I guess it's bad enough that they decided to go back to the CP3.

I think you may be right. There were a fair number of newer Duramax owners that were springing for the switch back to the CP3 and that was not too cheap.

Yes, Ram went with the CP4 for only a 2 year period, 2019 and 2020 I believe. They switched back for 2021 and are doing retrofits on the CP4 equipped trucks.

Forum Member 1HasBeen has a very early run 2019 and has been following the situation very closely. I don't think that he has had his CP4 replaced yet. But I know that he has a handle on the specifics of the situation. He may be able to chime in here with additional information if he sees this thread.

Which manufacturer is going back and building trucks with the CP3?.

FWIW, I use the Motorcraft PM-22 as well with every fill up.

with the fuel filters on today's diesels, don't waste your money on additives.. Just buy decent fuel and you'll be o.k. Think about the truckers, they add nothing but raw fuel and drive them things half a million miles.....

A year and a half with the 6.7. No additives in mine.

Ford, Cummins, and Duramax all ran a CP4 injection pump and it seems like the Duramax has the most failure rates vs the other two. Main reason being GM NEVER ran a lift pump, which made the injection pump work harder. The other half of the issue, like already stated, is ULSD is garbage. They took out a lot of the lubricating properties in the fuel which also made the MPG worse compared to the NON ULSD fuel. When ULSD came out back in 03 the 12V P-pumped Cummins trucks weren't having as much of an issue like the VP44 injection pump (98.5-02) trucks were. We were using a quart of 2 stroke oil or ATF as an additive to our fuel to help the pumps. Cant do that stuff now with all the emissions components on today's diesel engines.
My LML Duramax I run Power Service in my fuel because it sits for long periods being stored during the winter months and adds lubricity. I also added a Fleece Performance in tank fuel pump. The L5P ( 2017 and newer ) finally have a lift pump.
Cummins actually endorses and recommends Power Service as an additive in their engines. If it's good enough for a Cummins, it's good enough for the other two, if you feel the need/want of more lubricant in the fuel.
