Do I need a sway bar?

Just purchased my first TT in early December and have not actually towed it anywhere except home from the CW dealer. It is a 2016 Whitehawk 27DSRL. I tow it with my 2010 Ford F-150 Supercrew, 5.4L V8, 6.5' bed, Max Tow Package, 3.73 axle ratio. When I picked up the TT from CW, I asked both my sales person and the tech installing my WDH, (no integrated sway in WDH), whether I also needed sway bars. They both said it wasn't necessary, so I didn't have any installed. I'm really re-thinking that decision, but don't know the answer. I had no issues towing it the 24 miles home on the freeway in the pouring rain. So, do I need sway control bars and, if so, one or two?

Hi WyEm,

You didn't say what type of WDH have, but you did indicate that your WDH doesn't have integrated sway control.

From the Jayco web site, it states that you're trailer has a 31.5' exterior length.

Even though your trailer has the Tracker-Wide axles, I would still add some type of sway control to your WDH. I would start off with one and see how it handled.

Better to have it then wish you had it.

Hi WyEm,

I had a Whitehawk 30DSRE and towed it with a 1/2 ton. It was a little longer and heavier than the 27DSRL but even with the wide stance axles I found that the anti sway was a blessing in windy conditions. I had the Andersen hitch which incorporated the anti sway but I would get two if your hitch will allow.

I'd say it's probably good to consider getting one. That's a pretty long trailer and susceptible to sway.

If it were me, I would learn as much about the WDH you have (reading the manual/watching youtube/etc). Once you have a good feel for what it is and how to make adjustments to it, then I would head down the road a bit to see how towing goes.

Then make your decision.

Yup it's built in to yours. No need for external sway control.

Hey Docbrown are you sure about that? When I looked up the eaz lift elite it just showed WD not sway control. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong one. I just want to be sure that we are giving the OP correct information.

Yes..., and due to the length/weight of the 27DSRL most WDH manufacture's will recommend having two friction control sway bars (one on each side) with a standard WDH like the Eaz lift e-lite. The standard WDH spring bars are not designed to provide sway control.

If THIS is the wd hitch, it does not have integrated sway control.

I would suggest sway control as well. For that length it is suggested for 2 sway bars as mentioned. Downside to the side mounted sway bars is they may need to be removed when backing, or making very tight turns (if I understand correctly- never used one myself).

Couldn't hurt to try talking to your salesman to see if you can get credit for a wd hitch w/ integrated sway control.

If you decide to upgrade to a new system, the Reese HP Dual Cam, Reese SC, and the Equal-I-Zer 4 way systems are very good systems for the money. The DC is a little more finicky to set up, or if the tw (tongue weight) changes a fair amount it needs to be re-adjusted (empty vs full fresh water tank if it's in front of the axles). The SC and 4 way system are very similar, but the Reese hitch head (same hitch head of both the DC and SC models) does allow for a little more "fine tuning" regarding the hitch head for the wd bar angle adjustment. Can't go wrong with any of the 3.

From research, the Anderson does a pretty good job, but if you have a heavier tw, the Anderson may not be able to transfer enough weight back to the tv (tow vehicle) front axle. It only works with certain coupler styles as well, so make sure to do your research.

Here is a link to wdh set up and how a wdh works.

Regardless if you keep the Eaz Lift, or buy a new integrated system, once the trailer is loaded for a trip you will probably need to re-adjust the wdh. Reason is the dealer is setting up the hitch for an empty trailer. Though some dealers are able to get the hitch very close, not sure if it's luck ot maybe they are very good.

Good luck!!!

On our previous trailer we had the same hitch that you have now. With one anti sway bar I could always feel transports coming from behind.
Our current trailer is similar to the one you have. With the Equal-i-zer hithc I don't feel transports at all.

As a minimum I would add at least one anti sway bar . As said above 2 are recommended.

If you can trade the hitch in I'd go for one like the Equal-i-zer that has the sway control built in. I know I'm glad I switched.
