Do I Need An Equalizer Hitch with a 165 Sport?

I have a silverado crew cab short bed I pulled my 165 home with. Would an equalizer hitch be a good idea with a camper this small and lightweight? How exactly do these hitches work and what are the benefits? I used one with a 26 foot enclosed race car trailer 15 years ago, and I could tell a big difference with it. Didn't know if they made a lighter weight version as all I've seen are for 10,000 lb trailers.

I have a 185RB that I am pulling with a F-150 and I use a weight distribution hitch, it was from my last TV, so the dealer adjusted it for the F-150 at no charge and I continue to use it. The only thing that I can tell is when the trailer is on without the WD it seems like the nose of the truck is up a little bit, when the WD hitch is on it seems to level out.

I'm not convinced you need an Equalizer brand hitch, but certainly a weight distribution hitch of some sort should be used. But yes, they make WD hitches for smaller trailers based on tongue weight. I use a trunnion bar style hitch with 1K pound bars.

I thought an equalizer hitch was a weight distribution hitch. I'm learning. My truck handled it fine but you never know maybe in a windy situation or on the interstate in traffic. I assumed I needed a lighter duty hitch, if anyone could recommend one or show me some pics I'd appreciate it. Thanks

If you're partial to the Equal-i-zer brand, they have 4K, 6K, 10K, 12K, and 14K. Do you need it? If your truck can handle the dead weight of the hitch, then no. You may want some sway control though, and you can get both with one purchase.

No worries! I thought that too at one time. As said above, at a minimum use a sway control bar. For your needs a friction bar will work just fine.

I really don't think you need a weight distribution hitch with that small a trailer towing with a full size pickup.

Many folks over the years have referred to a WDH (weight distribution hitch) as a equalizer hitch..., which is fine as long as one doesn't get it confused with the "Equal-i-zer" brand of WDH during a thread discussion (has happened).

The "Equal-i-zer" brand of WDH has integrated sway control, thus is designed a little differently then the conventional WDH.

Forgot my truck has 2 inch lowering shackles on the rear. It was a tad squatted, maybe the hitch will level that out. I thought maybe I just needed a taller hitch since it was the first time I pulled it home.
