Do I still need my WDH with this new truck?

My trailer is 4200 empty and likely 5000 loaded up. I just bought a MaxTow EcoBoost with the class 4 hitch on it, capable of towing more than double what this trailer weighs... gonna be sweet!

Do I still need to use my WDH? Tongue weight is probably around 500-550lbs at most.

The first thing to know is the weight ratings of your TV's OEM receiver. There should be a "Weight Carrying" and "Weight Distribution" rating stamped on it. If you can insure that your trailer's "loaded" tongue weight will always be at/below the "Weight Carrying" limit then a WDH isn't required.

IMO even if you are below the Weight Carrying limit most folks find that using a WDH makes for a better towing experience.

My hitch is good for 10,000 total/1,000 tongue without weight distribution, or 14,000 total/1,400 tongue with it. I suppose I will just keep using my 600lb bars just to make it tow that much better, but it sounds like I don't actually need it.

I am sure you will prefer towing with the bars. At one time I went from a half ton to a three quarter ton and thought I wouldn't need the bars. I took the trailer for a ride and ended up pulling into a wide spot along side the hiway to put the bars on.

The first trailer I bought was a used Coachman, I towed it home 100 miles with the 1500 I had before the current 2500 with no WDH because I did not have one. That trailer was around 4500 empty. Way too much rear end squat towing without WD, I obtained a WDH ASAP. Your truck is undoubtedly more capable then my 04 1500 was, but I still think you would be happier with a decent WDH system and sway control.

I've done ALOT of miles with and without WDH bars installed in my 1 ton with trailers from 4000 - to 10,000 lbs. Yup no doubt your truck CAN do it but the bars will make it that much of a smoother rider. Takes me 10 minutes to hook up including the bars. Not like you are saving time but not using them.

I agree with the comments above. My Expedition can tow 6000 without a WDH so I don't need it to tow my X213. Tows a lot nicer with it though.
