Duramax/Allison longjevity

We have an 05 GMC with a Duramax/Allison setup- We have surpassed 100k without any major repairs- I am curious as to what experiences others have had? We have replaced several normal maintenance items such as u-joints, hanger bearings, batteries, and tires- We also replaced the water pump- We do need to have the dash gauges repaired but that is all I am aware of that needs taken care of- All replies welcome- THANX in advance- JMHO- DD

Talking diesels with a retired diesel mechanic from Oregon recently, he said you should get 200,000 miles without any major repairs or you have a lemon.

Also, talking with a friend of my sister, he has the Ford 7.3L 2000 model year. He said you should get 200-250,000. He has 160,000 and said it's just broken in :-)

My FIL has a 2001 Duramax dually. At around 100K he had to put injectors in, a $4200 repair. But I think the injector issue was limited to certain years. Other then that he has had good service from it.

117,000 on my 05 Duramax/Allison and only thing other than routine maintenance on transmission, oil/filter change, fuel filters was a rear seal on the right rear axle (200.00). I realize things could break tomorrow but confident that, after I replace the original serpentine belt soon just because I don't want to push my luck, 200,000 is going to happen without any major mechanical issues.

You should also do both idler pulleys and belt tensioner pulley.

I had a pulley freeze up on me just as we pulled into a campsite. Not fun backing in the trailer without power steering because I had to remove the belt. I also got lucky it didn't damage my fan when it got tangled around it after coming off when the pulley froze up.

The key word in a lot of these posts is "maintenance". If the truck is properly serviced and small items taken care of it should be good for a long time. Even a seemingly big repair bill equals to just a few months of payments on a newer truck.

I am pushing 150,000 on mine The only real problem came from replacing the injectors and that was covered under a secret GM warranty..

I peruse The Diesel Place forum and find it to be quite helpful if you in fact were to have a question or an issue. The only mechanical problem I've had is with a glow plug. If at the time I had my scanner I would have changed it out myself. I've got 75K on the ticker and 75% of those miles my D/A has been towing my 12K pound 5W. When I leave this life someone is going to have to pry my still-clenched hands off of its steering wheel.

Very true. Think I read GM considers the anticipated service life of the engine to be in the range of 250-300,000 miles. I have one of them Cummins engines. My chief fear is will the rest of the truck outlast the engine! The month I paid it off, the power steering pump had a catastrophic failure and the front sway bar links and all the bushings needed replacement. All for the ridiculously low price of $2100.

I know this is questions about Diesels but like any vehicle, maintenance is key to long service on any vehicle.

Our current 2012 GMC Duramax only has about 17,000 miles on it with no problems but my other truck is 2006 GMC 1/2 Ton Gas 4.8 with 260,000 miles on it, no engine or transmission repairs to date, not even a water pump replacement.

Look at the positive side of the $2100 repair bill. At $500 a month it is only around 4 months of payments and only 3 months at a payment of $700.

It's good to see that there are so many people driving a Duramax without issues. I am the original owner of an '03 GMC with 110,000 miles on it. I have replaced the injectors twice, once under warranty. A full guage cluster replaced with memory re-flash, steering box was replaced with 2 weeks left on the extended warranty. Several sensors, a 4X4 auto locking thing-a-ma-jig, both front door power window motors. Most of these issues were warranty repairs and what I had to pay for, the service writer at my local GMC dealership gave me extreme discounts. On the upside, the past three years have been trouble free and hopefully, being diligent with the routine maintenance is finally paying off.

I love my GMC but there have been a couple unforeseen items:
About every 20,000 miles I need to have the lower steering column bearing replaced.
One of the front hub bearings needed to be replaced at around 65,000 miles.
I now have 82,000 miles on "her" and she runs great!
I think someone else posted that they weren't worried about the engine or tranny. That they would outlast the rest of the vehicle...my sentiments exactly!

A little late for this reply, but a friend of mine, who takes very good care of his 3500 DRW, had his turbo go out at 30k. The dealer replaced it, in warranty, and the replacement went at 29,000, ruining a major trip. GMC was not interested at all, so he was stuck for the whole replacement cost.

He's easy on the throttle and pulls a 36' fiver. I'm not sure of the model year but I'd say about an '09. He was shopping Ford and Dodge as of last week.

If anyone has any thoughts on why these turbos went so soon, I'll forward them to him.

You do have to let the turbo cool down before shutting off the engine. Around 350* to 400* seem to be the temp most people look for. He may or may not be aware of this.
