I really like @Wireman's real world numbers, and it is a great example of why towing capacity is not the most important number. It would be very difficult to add another 1600# of trailer back there without going over the CCC and RGAWR. Payload is almost always the limit on getting a good setup.

That's why I think the OP's 5300# UVW (dry weight) pushes him out to only the largest SUV's. Loaded up, there's a good chance that the OP's trailer would exceed some of the JGC's capacity.

Gotta say that the 30mpg unladen highway is VERY attractive. So far this Endurance V8 is getting me about 11mpg in regular city driving. Might have something to do with that exhaust note tempting me to keep on putting my foot into it... Those Tennessee boys know how to make a great sounding V8 - maybe all that NASCAR stuff...

One of variables is the tongue weight. Sometimes people tend to assume that tongue weight is X lbs. There are ways to lower TW (remove battery from tongue, do not put a lot of stuff in the pass through, etc.). Also, depending on the hitch and the speed you are towing, may be OK with 8-10% tongue weight.

Without such details it is not possible, whether or not somebody is over the towing capacity.

Too bad Ford quit making the Excursion.
Putting 6 people in a SUV is much more comfortable than wedging 6 people into a Pickup.

My trailer is about max for my TV, based on my numbers. I really wouldn't want to pull anything longer because of the shorter wheelbase of the JGC.

I put new Goodyear Endurance tires on the trailer and rear airbags on the Jeep before my trip.

The new tires helped a lot on stability compared to the old China bombs(Ranier). A lot better tire.

The airbags were to minimize rear sag, not increase capacity. I think they also helped with the stability.

Exactly - I wish Ford would bring back the king of SUVs. Sounds like the OP is looking for something new, but for those interested and willing to search, there are some very well maintained Excursions (both diesel and V10 gas) still out there. I looked for years before finding mine, from the original owner. I have a low miles 7.3 that we absolutely love. I haul our horses with it more frequently, but it also handles the TH very well. Unequaled room and very comfortable on road trips.

My neighbor has a 7.3 Excursion with over 250k miles. It will pull anything and his family of 6.

He says it will outlive him.

There’s a company that can convert your super duty into an Excursion

We towed a jay flight 25rks for many years with a diesel jeep grand cherokee with no problems, only issue was high winds. In high winds the fact that the tt was 6500 lds and the jeep only 4500 made the “tail wag the dog”. Otherwise it usually did better than with a ram 1500 especially on steep grades.

We tow with a 25rks jay flight with a 2008 Toyota Sequoia and it’s great. We had a 2500 suburban with a 8.1 and 4.10 rear, the highest towing capacity in an suv ever, and the sequoia is better in every way. It’s more stable, goes better, stops better, rides better and gets better gas mileage. Tbh, I was really surprised how good the Toyota is or how much technology has improved, or how much the Chevy was behind.

One more perspective, I also towed the same trailer with my dads 2005 dodge ctd and it wasn’t any better which surprised me. I could tell there was a trailer out back and I kinda expected not to notice the trailer with such a big truck. That said it also pulled the same with a trailer twice the size.

I'm currently towing a 2018 X23B dry weight at @5,000 lbs empty and about 5,600 lbs loaded. TV is a 01 Dodge Durango 4X4 with the 5.9 V8 and 3.92 gears. I checked into the tow capacity before I bought this SUV. With that engine and gearing its tow rating is 7,350 lbs. The same vehicle with the 3.55 gears is tow rated lower at 5,650. I would suggest you look at a few vehicles and research the tow ratings for various engine and gear combinations before you make a purchase. Two wheel drive vs 4X4, engine, transmission and gearing all make a difference in the tow capacity.

Suburban, never looked back

Used a Silverado for several years with my Airstream, and then my 2014 287bhbe. Silverado was adequate, with what I know now to be a typical pickup porpoise and go ride. 2 years ago bought a 2016 Suburban. Wasn't exactly sure what to expect with towing the Jayco, but boy howdy was I impressed with the tow experience! Talk about the best kept secret ever. I'll never go back to a pickup as a tow vehicle, I'm spoiled for ever. Gone is the porpoise, just simply gone. Sway, I've been known to not even use the anti-sway for short trips, say 200 miles or so, there isn't much sway to worry about. Fuel mileage, a bit better, pretty much average 10 with the Suburban, used to be 8 to 9 with the Silverado. But ride quality and near silence inside, no comparison at all. Cheers, cactus.

The Audi Q7 has a, tow capacity of 7,700 lbs with the factory hitch. I tow a Jay Feather 24RL which is about 6,000 lbs ready to go.

21c with Lexus gx470

Hey there, I tow a Jayco 21c hybrid with a 2006 Lexus gx470 and have zero problems. The GVWR is 6200lbs and tounge weight max is 975 with a WDH, 6500 max gross tow weight.
We use to use a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, if I recall correct it was rated to tow up to 8000lbs but it had independent rear suspension which made the sway quiet fun, it had plenty of power to tow but any wind or passing a semi and you had to gas it to pull straight. You may already know but try to find an SUV that does not have independent rear suspension. The Lexus Gx are built on a truck chassis (solid rear axel) and have air bags in the rear so there is no issue with being level either. Good luck with your search, share with us what you end up getting

We've been pulling a 1009 22FB for 3 years now with a 2007 Ford Expedition, love it. Hope to be upgrading first to an F250 or RAM2500 and then possibly a Fifth Wheel, Truck first then we will see.

New tow vehicle

I’m towing a 2018 23RL 6000 lbs with a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe with the tow package and an equalizer 10k lb hitch. It works fine for my wife and I.

TT tow with SUV

I tow my 30’ Jayfeather with 2008 Ford Expedition and Sway Pro WD. Would love a new one, but they don’t make V8 anymore and I agree with the DW...I want an SUV!

Is anyone pulling a TT with an SUV?

My concern is their weight vs. pulling/braking power.

Thank you.
I pulled our Rockwood 3 years, than our 24RKS with a 1990 GMC 2500 Suburban for a couple of years. I did have some engine upgrades. Factory 350 (5.7) in 1990 was 210 horsepower. I added a Whipple supercharger and it was about 375 horses after that (on paper anyway). The 5.7 1500 Ram we have now is rated at 395 horsepower.

I pulled a 7000 pound boat for years with an Infiniti QX56. It was rated to tow 8500 pounds. The newer version is the QX80 which has even more HP and torque that the old QX56. The Nissan 5.6L V8 has been around for years and has been constantly refined. It's a good engine. Braking was never a problem and the boat only had surge brakes. The Infiniti has all the bells and whistles for your DW. It is a sweet ride.

The Nissan Armada is the same basic vehicle with fewer luxuries and a lower price point.
