I get 19 in mixed driving and 9 towing. No passes in that calculation.

For reference, my Cummins and my 3.5L Ecoboost get within 1 mpg of each other pulling the same trailer under the same conditions, with the Cummins just slightly higher. I have never witnessed this supposed poor towing mileage with my Ecoboost truck and regularly achieve well over 300 towing miles per tank with my current setup.

Oh buddy, I can confirm the poor mileage into a headwind for sure. It seems that these 3.5 TT trucks are more affected by headwind drag than others. It can certainly make the power to overcome it, but those turbos wind up and are in constant boost which really does cost fuel. I have seen 6-7mpg pulling into a strong headwind, whereas my no-wind, flat land mileage is about 9.5mpg.

I'm not seeing it. Maybe I will at some point. But I've been waiting to have these poor towing MPG #s people keep talking about and it just keeps knocking down 10-10.5 mpg all day long.

Maybe the 10-speed auto with the gen 2 Ecoboost trucks makes a difference.

Just wondering if anyone out there has something similar that you can share your experience or advice.

I'm pulling my Octane 222 toy hauler (8000 lb GVWR) with my 2.7 EcoBoost F150. I don't have any issues. If you only tow as a weekend camper then you will probably be ok but I would go F250 if full timing.

The 7,500 lb. dry/empty weight of a 2018 Jayco 29RE can easily balloon to 9,000 lbs. vacation-ready. 9,000 lbs. is a lot of trailer for a truck that only weighs 5,000 lbs. (i.e., tail-wagging-the-dog).

A 3/4 - 1-ton gas truck weighs approx. 6,500 - 7,000 lbs. A 3/4 - 1-ton diesel truck, 7,500 - 8,000 lbs. Physics (mass and momentum) says a heavier truck is going to provide better handling (i.e., more dog-wagging-the tail).

Lastly, keep in mind, one person's "it tows like there's nothing back there", can easily be another person's worst white-knuckle experience. Subjective input is just that, subjective.

Looks like your TT is 4000 dry and 5500 gross, so the couple thousand pounds less probably gets you the slightly better gas mileage, presumably.

I'm towing about 7000 lbs of TT loaded with a '17 F150 3.5 Ecoboost that has a payload of 1776, and GVWR of 7000 lbs., and get mpg in the range of 8 with long uphill grades and headwinds, on up to 10-11 with longer downhill grades and no headwinds. Towing has been comfortable for me, even with stronger crosswinds, as the WD hitch w/ sway control appears to be very good at avoiding sway events. I've kept my fingers on ready to squeeze the trailer brake controller anticipating sway when semi trucks go past in heavier winds, but never had to deploy that procedure yet, so, good surprises so far in that regard.

I'm right close to max tow vehicle's payload when I'm pulling the TT with 2 or 3 people, camper shell, and other gear in the truck, so can't see how someone could pull 9000 lbs with the same truck configuration without being quite a bit over on payload capacity of the truck, even if the truck is rated to tow 11-12K.

Yes, my trailer goes across the scales at almost exactly 5500# as loaded for camp. Keep in mind also that mine is a narrow and tall trailer. So, wind resistance will be different than a wider trailer or one with a greater frontal profile.
