Equal-i-zer 10K or 12K
We purchased a 2016 Eagle 284BHBE this morning and I am going to install my own weight distribution hitch. I have a 1984 Ford Ranger long bed 4 cyl with tow package so am good to go there. Just kidding, 2015.5 GMC 3500HD Duramax.
I had a Equal-i-zer 10K on our 2011 26 BH and am well versed on how to dial it in. Advertised dry hitch weight is 760 on this new trailer. I know this is probably low and camper will be loaded with gear and full water on board when we camp. I am wondering if I should just make the jump to the 12K? My instinct says yes but would like to get other opinions. Looking to order it this week.

Not sure if you can just swap out your bars if you need a larger solution.

I think you'll be cutting it very close with the 10,000/1,000 (HW). Try as we may most of us pack more weight than we initially plan on. If it were me I'd go with the 12,000/1,200 to be safe.

Take the fully load trailer weight (9250 lbs) and multiply that by 0.12 and 0.15 That will be closer to your tongue weight when loaded (1110 to 1387 lbs).
Seems 12k would be minimum. 14k might be the better choice.

Lol, you had me going with the Ranger....
My instinct would say the 12K one as well. Actual hitch weight after propane, batteries and loading up could easily be over 1000#.
P.s. With the Equal-i-zer is it possible to just replace the bars?

I no longer have the 10K hitch, went with the 26BH 1.5 years ago. I wish the dealer sold Equal-i-zer but they don't. Otherwise I'd set up and go to scale to make sure before buying. But in reality, I'll be ordering online so want to be sure. I like to error on side of caution, hence my daily driver is a 3500HD diesel.
I thought a 12K would suffice but maybe a 14K is a better option. I thought you could have too much bar with these systems or am I wrong?

I agree the 10K will be a bit too light, but if you're going to step up to the 12K you might as well get the 14K. The bars are identical, the only difference is the metal thickness in the hitch head. The 14K is thicker metal, therefore stronger. You won't notice a difference in ride stiffness much because the bars are the exact same. The hitch head will just be a bit heavier but your truck won't be phased by it (maybe only your back).

Went online to etrailer and ordered a 14K Equal-i-zer. $550 with free shipping. Hope it doesn't make my truck squat.

You'll love that hitch. Sounds like you've got yourself a nice set up coming. I can throw a 600lb quad into my brother in law's 1 ton and it doesn't squat at all, so I think you'll be fine with that hitch head. You can probably expect about an inch of squat when your trailer is hitched on with your bars engaged, and this is normal.

I bought a 12k for my 2016 28BHBE, also from the same site. You would have been ok with the 12k as they were selling 10k's for the same unit at my dealership. Good luck.

IMO a good choice. With the 284BHBE a family loaded TT tongue weight of 1,200lbs will be about the norm. Having a modest over-rated WDH is fine as long as the WDH is adjusted properly to the TV/TT loaded weights.
Also, as mentioned a rear TV squat of 1"-2" is normal even with a dialed-in WDH.
My Eagle 278FBS loaded tongue weight was 1,200lbs for years and used a Reese WDH with 1,200lb spring bars, worked fine......, but a couple years ago I added two deep cycle batteries and some extra tools in the pass-thru, tongue weight jumped to 1,300lbs. Replaced the Reese 1,200lb bars with Reese 1,500lb bars, tows great. My 278FBS has a similar GVWR as your 284BHBE GVWR of 9,250lbs.
Great to hear that you plan to hit the scales, the results make for a solid towing system.
Country_Mouse.....: The Equal-i-zer WDH brand spring bars aren't interchangeable, where a Reese Strait-Line WDH spring bars are.
