F 250

I currently tow a 2006 Eagle 301 RLS 5th wheel with a 2003 F350. My wife has decided I need a newer truck. My 03 is getting rusty, it still runs like a top but is starting to show it's age. I'm not brand loyal but my last two Fords have done me well. One with the 5.4 and the current one with the 6.0.

I am having a heck of a time finding what I consider a well priced F350. I have come across one F250 that seems to have what I call a reasonable price. It has the 6.7 engine. By the numbers I think I would probably be over the payload specs. The Jayco is said to have a hitch weight of 2130 lbs dry. Is there anyone that has a similar configuration.

This is the curse of 3/4 ton diesels. Their payload often times isn’t much more than a half ton due to the added engine weight. I can only suggest checking the trucks payload listed on the yellow sticker on the drivers door jamb and do the math. I personally would keep looking for a one ton. Minimal difference in price and you’ve got a built in safety margin as well as the option to go bigger on the trailer in the future without replacing the truck.

I understand your desire to stay with Ford, have you considered gas? I assume your overall weight is around 12k? Payloads on gasser should be in the mod 3k range depending on equipment. It should be more than adequate in towing power and payload with 7.3. I have a 2020 2500 chev gasser and it has 3552 in payload. I have pulled a 12k fiver approx. 15k over all terrain in country with no problems. The 10k I saved on purchase has made travel budget much more enjoyable.

Good advice above. My 2012 F-250 with the 6.7L PSD in an XLT trim only had 2300lbs of payload. My current F-250 with the 6.2L gas engine has 3300lbs of payload and is rated to tow up to 12,500lbs with the 3.73 rear end.

Our 2019 F250 gas weighs 7500# with hitch installed, people and full tank, so there's actually only 2500# payload available. After that, I started putting stuff in the bed of that truck and filled the back seat with stuff too, as we travel more. Payload remaining now is less than that- maybe 2100# or so.

We're ok on weight with our small "half-ton" 5th wheel, but just barely.

I would definitely get a 350 next time, for breathing room.

The sticker on my gas F-250 says 2924 lbs, loaded lariat model added some weight. It tows my camper no problem all through the Rockies here. If I wanted a diesel, I'd go for the 1 ton. If I had a fifth wheel, i'd go for the 1-ton diesel dually. You can never have too much truck The cost becomes prohibitive fast. Running my current truck until the wheels literally fall off.

The 10K GVWR cap on the F250 is a killer. I had a 2017 F250 6.2, payload was 3300. Was great on flat ground, but towing in the mountains left something to be desired. Fuel mileage while towing is abysmal. (Think 6-7 mpg tops). I thought I could live with the 34 gal tank, but too many times stressed I was going to run out when towing. Would definitely need to have the 48 gal tank if I ever did gas again, but that means CCLB, which isn't for everyone.

Traded for a 2020 F350 6.7. Payload is 4500. Towing my Eagle TT is a dream. Unless I lose the emissions/fuel system lottery, I wouldn't go back to gas because I simply love the consistent power and exhaust brake.

One thought, if you can wait 12 weeks, order a F350 with a 6.2. You won't win any races, but it's a proven platform and has more than enough payload for most anything you'll want to haul. The cost differences you're seeing are not 250 vs 350, it's the way they're optioned (or the $8k for the 6.7). Exactly optioned 250s and 350s are within a few hundred of each other.

Go with the 1 ton, ask me how I know, well, I'm glad you ask, I bought a 3/4 ton CTD and my payload was 2150lbs my new 5th wheel at the time payload was about, the last time I went to the scale was 2920lbs.

Well, it did it but as you can see I was way over, now if I was about 100-200lbs over I wouldn't sweat it too much but it was haunted me almost every day.

So I convince my DW that I needed a 1 ton to be legal, I was able to find back in the end of 2019 a left over 1 ton with only 19 miles on it, well as you can tell I jump on it, it was cheaper if I would have bought it brand new. I did upgrade to a bigger 5th wheel so I needed to upgrade my truck but good luck and let us know what you decide. The payload on my 2018 dodge ram is 3799lbs so I'm good to go.

My 2020 f250 xlt ccsb has a payload of 3041 with the 6.2, a 7.3 would be comparable. Engine weight is similar between the 2. However for not much more you can be in a f350 similarly equipped. The real diff between the 250 and 350 are the (Same exact) tires are inflated to 80lbs vs 65lbs and it has overload springs. Also be careful if your state requires different registration for a higher gvwr (over 10k).

And check out xplan pricing, join mustang club of America for $25 or EAA.org for $50 to get xplan pricing…. I used EAA and got xplan pricing plus an extra $1k off (EAA had an extra $1k off in December 2020). I got about $5k off msrp, which is good in my area, they don’t come down from msrp here on f250’s.

In a Chevy, the only difference between 3/4 and a 1 ton is rear helper springs in the rear. The axle, frame, and front suspension is exactly the same. The 1 ton Chevy also comes standard with 18” wheels that get you another 200 pounds of GVWR, over the standard 17” inch wheels on a 3/4 ton truck. I called GM and verified this myself. On a Ford I am told, the difference is one extra leaf in the rear springs, I didn’t call them to check. Basically a 3/4 is marketing/ licensing move by the factory in comparison to the SRW 1 Ton. Jay

this is correct... depending on your state licensing is different and i won the lottery here we pay a small fee on a one ton vs 10% MSRP on a 3/4 ton...
in 2020 the numbers came way up across all manufacturers on 3/4 tons

I have a 2013 F350 Crew Cab 6.7L SRW LB with the factory puck system. GVWR is 11,500. Thought I had it all buttoned up for a 5'er. I was very wrong. One little figure I failed to check. Payload cap. It's 3074lbs. for this truck and has a 5'er weight cap of 15,900. This vehicle will not tow a North Point much less a Pinnacle. Well..let me clarify that. It would, but it shouldn't. Even in their smallest forms. Kinda disappointing. Be careful as you shop. I truly believe 5'ers are dually territory. Yep..there's SRW's out there doing it but, some shouldn't.

Thank you all for the replies. After doing a some more research I have decided that the 3/4 ton truck just isn't enough truck for me to be comfortable. I have thought about a gasser(6.2) but they seem to be far and few between in a short box. I need the short box to be short enough to park the truck and 5th wheel in my yard.

I am suffering sticker shock. I bought my current truck in 08 when it was 5 yrs. old and paid just under 20k. A comparable truck that is 5yrs old is into the 40+k range. So many of those trucks have logged large miles. I found a Ram tonight at a sort of comfortable price which I may look into a little further.

Fortunately I do have some time before spring comes but I sure don't want to miss out waiting for something else to come along. I seem to do that quite oftern. Once again thanks for your input.

Yes, truck prices are insane right now. I read somewhere that the Ford Louisville truck plant has some 150K orders to fill at this point and are way behind. When dealers do have any Super Dutys, they don't last a day on the lot therefore the dealers are not discounting any trucks they do have. The best discount right now is if you join the Mustang Club to get X Plan pricing. The cost of joining is $25 I think. My F-250 is 3 years old now and recently my selling dealer offered me more than I paid for it to trade it in. Crazy.

Both new and used truck prices are insane right now, and when I started looking late last summer, everything I saw was Cadillac price and Yugo quality. I wasn’t really ready to purchase, but we stumbled onto the ‘15 F350 XLT CCLB 6.7PS in my signature. I didn’t want leather and moon roofs, so being in excellent condition, with 85k in miles and $34k price we jumped on it as it fit our current and anticipated future needs. Keep looking, you’ll find what you need. My only suggestion is be willing to drive. The DW and I are looking at a potential new to us 5th wheel right now. Trailer looks great and price is decent. But it’s 12 hours away lol. A couple hundred in fuel is cheap for a few thousand better price....

My oldest boy is a wrench at a used truck dealer specializing in low mile trucks. Just recently sold a 92 dodge 4x4 w/ cummins. 22,xxx miles. $42,000. Late last week another 4x4 dodge w/ cummins, a 91 w/11,xxx miles $45,000. They are on the lot for less then 48 hours. Sells over 50 a month.

I know, it's crazy. I noticed a truck last night on autotrader. Contacted the dealer this afternoon. Already sold. Anything that is decent seems to sell within a day or two.

I have a 2018 Eagle 293RKDS and tow it with a 2018 F350. I had an F250 when when I upgraded from an Eagle HT and the gas engine did fine, but I ended up with what I call the "Ford Squat". It did not sit level enough for me but Ford said it was "normal". Well I ended up adding a pair of leaf springs and it solved the problem. When I went to the F350 no problem, just expect a rough ride unloaded. Trade-offs. I have a 4.3 rear axle by the way. Glad I did.

I have read a lot that the 4.30 gears are the ones to get with the gasser.

I'm not quite ready for the dually.

What I am finding now is that any truck that is fairly priced is snapped up as soon as it is advertised. I check Craigslist and autotrader numerous times a day. I saw a truck advertised on Tuesday after the dealers were closed. Emailed to enquire the next day. The truck sold the day before.
