F150 Ecoboost Torture Test Videos.

http://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/experiencef150/

In case anyone has any doubts of the durability/performance of Ford's new Ecoboost, these series of videos should help to change your mind. I drove one of these the other day and I was crazy-impressed. Check it out....

I researched this. Premium is recommended but not required for best performance while towing. This is a bummer to me. I am the type of person that would feel compelled to run it all the time. At the current prices, this is not an option. Oh well, 6.2 it is.

Needing to run premium in the Eco is making the 6.2 even more attractive. Now if only they would offer the 6.2 in the XLT package. I need a Lariat like a horse needs a pogo stick.

My owner's manual suggests premium only for towing in hot and extreme conditions. Otherwise it suggests 87 is sufficient. I suspect one should run 87 if and until engine knock is noticed. I'll post my experience this summery. I'm hauling x23b with the ecoboost.

That is so cool, I wish they would do the same on the 3/4 ton class. But that won't happen because F250 vs Ram 2500 and Chevy 2500 would not be close Ram And chevy/GMC would win hands down.

That was a good video. Now all they have to do is make an ecoboost with a V8 with around 5.4 liters.

The videos are impressive and almost made me consider buying a Ford. I have to wonder, I know the tow rating is around 11k but do you feel the suspensions and brakes will be up to the task of towing the larger trailers. The 2500's are able to tow with more stability becaue everything is beefed up. Now it can be done with a 1/2 ton? What about a 5th wheel with all the weight over the smaller axle. I don't doubt the engine, just the other components. What are the opinions of the owners?

I'm dragging a 23B with mine and it has never seen a drop of premium. It pulls the trailer splendidly with no braking, sway, or other issues. You do have to be careful when taking off from a stop that you don't smoke the tires. That happened to me one time and I was more careful after that.

Getting back to the premium fuel thing, that is a recommendation only and if you don't use it you won't void your warranty or cause Armageddon to happen sooner. Besides, why complain about a mere $0.10 increase in cost per gallon? Would you stop camping because of that? I wouldn't. Around here gas will jump in price anywhere from $0.22 to $0.30 per gallon in one day and nobody stops driving because of that.

The difference between premium and regular around here in more like $0.20-$.035 a gallon. I know this because I have to run premium in my Acura MDX but my truck likes regular unleaded just fine. At $0.25 a gallon on a 26 gallon tank, that equals $6.50. Now exacerbate that by getting a measly 10 mpg and it could get expensive quick.

I'm really glad to hear you're not running premium on the F150 EcoBoost because I have been eye-balling that truck for a few weeks now. The torque and power is impressive.

Did you get the HD Payload feature too?

I doubt engine knock will be heard regardless of fuel used. This engine is all computer controlled and knock will be stopped probably before it even happens due to the computer adjusting the timing constantly.

I'm not a Ford fan, but knock won't happen I'm sure.

How many here remember the Ford Turbo Coupe back in the late 80's? The EcoBoost isn't Ford's first rodeo using small displacement engines and turbo's. The Turbo Coupe was a 4 cylinder, don't remember the displacement, and it really screamed. I rented several of them back when they were on the market. It was definitely impressive performance for such a small engine.

My neighbor has the 2010 F150 Platinum series with tow package and runs it on premium, tows a 2010 Eagle Super Lite 5th wheel 31.5 RLDS way too heavy of a trailer for the truck. He says he has problems towing up hills and now stores it close to where he likes to camp on weekends. When he brings it home it just sits on the side of the house not used. I asked him if he checked the weight of the trailer before he bought it. He stated the salesman told him it could handle it. I just shake my head and walk away.

Rule one, check your vehicle tow ratings and trailer weight, stay at least 80% or lower. Rule two, never trust a car salesman.

We did our research before we purchased our trailer and truck.

Enjoy the search.

If it is a 2010 Ford, it has the 5.4, not the ecoboost engine.

In any event, premium is not needed 98% of the time, and it's still cheaper than diesel. I'd buy an F150 in a heartbeat if I was in the market for a truck, considering that I don't pull my trailer any farther than 100 miles on a typical trip. If I was towing across the country, I'd want a 3/4 ton for anything above 8k lbs, but anything less than that the F150 should handle with ease (along with any other new 1/2 ton truck).

It engine might be up to the task but I really wouldn't want to tow our trailer with a half ton truck. I wouldn't want to tow it with a 3/4 ton. I wonder how long the axles will last with a heavy 5er or even with our trailer.

When I bought mine, I wanted the HD payload package but it was only available on the lower trim levels and regular cab designs IIRC. I think Ford was gearing (no pun intended) that feature to the contractor/workaday world trucks.

Once again, you have to make the choice for yourself if paying a bit more for premium only while towing is going to be the deal breaker for a vacation trip. I'm willing to spend a few extra dollars every once in a while but as stated earlier you don't HAVE to use premium on this motor. Believe me, it gets on it just fine with regular unleaded. If you wanted to split the difference use mid grade.

From what I've read on the Ford forums, the only time the Ecoboost really needs premium is when towing near capacity on long, steep hills when the weather is really hot. Even then, one can get away without it if one slows down and grabs gears when on a long upgrade. Using premium allows the engine to advance the spark a bit more, giving it a bit more power that helps the engine run a bit cooler since it isn't working quite as hard. If the engine does start to get too hot, it will switch to limp mode to avoid damage and give you time to get off the road to let it cool down. One has to really be working the snot out of it for that to happen.

Absolutely love my F150 with EB. I run 87 octane even when towing. I will run premium this summer for a cross country trip towing. The truck pulls like there is no tomorrow. When I am not towing this truck is like a 5400lb rocket. Put your foot into it and it will put you back in the seat. The 2012's actually have a higher tow rating than my 11. I am telling you Ford hit the nail on the head with this engine. I love watching the torture test videos just for fun. Just like the old SVT Lightning, don't test drive one if you don't plan on buying because once you do you will be signing on the dotted line! And no I don't work for Ford! LOL

My new baby has finally arrived via rail car and is sitting on the north side of Houston waiting for its last leg to the dealer. If all goes well, I'll be driving it around by the end of next week.

2012 F-150 XLT EB, HD payload/Max Towing, 7 luggers, Rear View cam, old man steps, side steps, and bucket seats. What sold me on this truck was the payload capacity of 2310 lbs give or take and GVWR of 8200 lbs.
