The F250 and F350s haul folks to job sites, haul supplies which could be groceries, take guys to lunch at McDonalds, picks up lumber at Home Depot. It sounds like a F250 is also a compromise without a primary mission it does really well.

I look at my truck as a tool. Sometimes I need a big framing hammer, sometimes a lighter hammer works just fine. Matching the tool to the job is important.

The payload is every bit a part of your tow capacity as the GCWR is. You shouldn't go over on either. The payload is what prevented us from getting the 150 we really wanted.

1/2 ton pulling a 38' RV?

Just because your truck should be able to tow it on paper doesn’t mean that you’ll feel safe towing maxed out.
I assume you don't mean the Jayflight 29RKS listed in your post. I'd be interested to see the model number of the camper you mention as well as the equipment in the pickup. My F150 is a super crew cab STX with 3.5V6. It pulls a 24RBS like its not there. My truck is spec'd at 10700 lbs tow capacity and the RV has a GVWR of 7700 lbs. Payload is just under 2000 lbs. I don't think anyone recommends maxing out the rated truck capacity. I'm under it even with firewood loaded in the bed.

The Ford specs for towing and payload are a bit hard to read. My guess is that your dad either didn't read the capacity right or maybe he maxed it out. Even if he's within the listed capacity, 38' might be a bit much for a lightweight truck to tow. I've never attempted something so big but from what I read, you might have a sway issue. The truck may be too light for such a long tow.

Doesn't your camper have breaks? Mine does and I've never had an issue stopping.

The one listed in my signature is mine. My dads Jayco is a lot bigger than mine. Mine has one slide; his has three. Dads is a Jayco Eagle 330RSTS. Much bigger and heavier than my 29RKS.
