I think the biggest difference between a F250 and a F350 is the payload. I got the F350 because a larger fifth wheel uses a lot of the usable payload with the high pin weight.

Sailor is correct. The payload capacity on my 2012 F-250 is around 2300lbs. I believe the 350 is around 3300lbs. We've been looking at 5th wheels also but the models we liked had pin weights that would exceed payload capacity before we were even in the truck.

I was looking for a left over '12 lariat crew and the one we found was a 350 which i am glad I did. My cargo capacity is close to 3800 lbs which will be good if we ever upgrade to a 5th wheel which I just saw the 34.5bhts but my wife would kill me having just bought our 314bds a year ago. Either 250 or 350 will do the job!!

agreed on going with a 3500 vs 2500...for the price difference the large increase in payload capacity is worth it imo.

The prices are usually really close between the 2500 & 3500's, actually when I purchased mine, most of the 2500's were actually more!!! Mine is a loaded 3500 Ram Mega Cab Laramie 3500 short bed with the Cummins 6.7 Turbo Diesel, it was actually a bit cheaper, not much, but towing our 31.5 Eagle 5er it doesn't even know its back there but I did have to get the sliding Curt Q20k hitch to keep the back of the truck cab intact on 90 degree or more jack nifes, lol!!! The 16K Curt hitch was sufficient but if we ever decide to go bigger were already set, but what we really like about the Curt hitch is that it not only tilts side to side and back and forth but roatates a full 360 degrees which will never try to twist the truck frame or 5er frame!!!

This is not really a 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton question as the F150 will give me 2200 lbs of payload vs about 3200 lbs on the F250. Besides the fact the F250 6.2 l will give me lousy gas milage I would like to hear from the experience of the towing community the pro's or Con's of selecting either option.

My existing truck tows the trailer really well, but I want some more payload to put more in the bed of the truck when on long trips.

Diesel would be great (800 ft-lbs of torque), but it's a $8k option!! so I'm not really considering it.

Any comments on ride quality?

My dad worked for Ford so I get Z plan so not considering other than Ford.
I am in the same position. My lease is up soon and I am thinking of going with the F250, just to get that more payload option, but then I will loose the mileage that I get with the F150 Eco as my daily driver. Wish there was a way to just try a vehicle out for like 6 months with out much expense.

Seeing the same thing here. Equally equipped 3500s have been within $500, or less with incentives. I think most people aren't willing to go to the ride quality of the 1-ton since the current crop of 3/4s ride better than the 10-15 yr old 1/2s.

I've always bought a truck for its capability not its fuel economy. That being said I've got an 05 F250 4wdext cab short bed and am averaging between 11 & 12 towing. We have been through 8 hours of mountains going to TN twice and I did about 9mpg at 65.

Any feedback on ride quality out there from those withe F150 HD payload or a newer model F250/350? Do your kidneys start to hurt in any of these after a long drive? I'm sure the ride is different empty vs towing.

I wont go above an XLT so I'll have the standard 40/20/40 bench seat no matter which truck I buy. I need the seating for 6.

That and, you can add Timberns to the 3/4 ton and BINGO it's a 1-ton in effect.

I had a 1/2 ton truck pulling a 29BHS and hated it. On the flats it was fine but going up and down mountains it was a white knuckle affair. I started looking at 3/4 ton trucks but found a 1 ton SRW and got that. It had an 8.1L gas motor. It barely noticed the trailer. I also found that by the time I added all of our gear to the bed of the truck (generator, blocks, chocks hoses, extension cords, bikes etc.) we were close to our GVWR on the truck fully loaded. I could have never done that with the 1/2 ton truck. I would have been way over. I did try to "fix" the 1/2 ton truck by adding timberens, rancho 9000 shocks, E rated tires etc. No dice didn't help the real problems. BTW the 1/2 ton trucks weigh much more unloaded than the door sticker says they do. This means you may have little payload left. I would take any truck I was test driving across a weigh scale and see what it really weighs! GM says my 2007 Tahoe weighs 5500# but it really weighs 6500#! Don't buy the window sticker as to weight!

I can't speak to the F150 hd package, but we drive my f350 on the weekend and any trip (empty and towing)we go on. My wife has one of those KIA Cadensa which is their luxury car and we still go in my truck (I also have a '13 Honda Accord that I drive back and forth to work, I run @65 miles a day). You can get a lariat with the 40/20/40 bench also.

I did go to the auto show yesterday. There was one gentleman who works at the Kentucky truck (the plant they make the the F250 and up at). We has pretty knowledgable and helped answer a lot of my questions. The other "experts" they had on hand knew less about the trucks than I did.

I was surprised to see the bed of the F250/350 is not as deep as the F150. I have some custom made gear that fits under the tonneau cover in my F150 that I would have to remake for a F250. Bummer! Now I am more confused than convinced on which way to go. I'm really torn. I would love the payload of the F250, but the bed and the gas milage really have me on the fence. On the other hand I hear all the advice from the old pro's here on the forum and there is nothing like experiance and wisdom.

The guy from Kentucky truck said if I want a 2014 I need to order it now as they will go into change over soon and their production schedule is pretty booked up.

It's not even a contest for me. The 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks are much more stable and much less likely to be overloaded. I have direct experience in this.

Agreed, no comparison with the heavier frame, brakes, suspension etc

I went from a 3/4 ton gasser to a 1/2 ton gasser and couldn't be happier. I do miss the stability while towing heavy loads but that rarely ever happens. My 26BH tows very well behind my Tundra but the wimpy P rated tires are gonna go in the spring. I did upgrade to a Propride 3P hitch for stability but that was needed with the 3/4 Ram I had as well. I would get sway with that too. (I had no sway control on my old WDH) The decision should be made based on what you want…do you tow heavy most of the time or do you run empty most of the time. For me I run about 15k miles a year. I tow between 3.5k and 4k a year so most is empty running around to work and trips. I get 30% better empty mileage than my old Ram did. I save about $1,000 a year just in fuel costs. I keep very strict mileage accounts.

Just brought home my new F250 6.2l!! Won't get to go on a trip with the TT until May, but looking forward to it. Sticker on the door has a 2799 payload rating. Should have no issues putting whatever I want in the trailer or the truck and still have some payload to spare. Got about 15 mpg on the way home from the dealer really babying the throttle. Will see how it does on the highway on a trip coming up.

Your eco-boost engine will be working much harder than the diesel.. this will cause it to fail sooner...
