F350 crew cab diesel

I'm thinking about a 2005-2008. Not dual. Anybody here have one that can offer positives and negatives about this truck?

If you're considering a diesel, there were two different PowerStroke diesel engines used during the date range you specified- the 6.0 (2005-2007) and the 6.4 (2008). The 6.0 was the more troublesome of the two.

When I went diesel, wanted to buy used, and kept coming across 6.0 PSD much lower priced than comparable Duramax trucks. After I researched the 6.0 I became a bit gun shy that I was buying someone else's problem. The real issue is not all 6.0 were bad, some never had an issue and others had all the issues -- EGR, Head Gaskets, Studs, Turbos, etc. I learned that for about $6-$7k you can "bullet proof" it, but if I was dropping another $7k I just assumed get a Duramax.

That said all Duramax's arent created equal either. I have a LMM and it's been great, but IIRC LBZ was generally considered the best and LB7 the most problematic.

I didn't research Dodge's CTD because I didn't want a Mega Cab and the Crew Cab had a notch in the backseat that effected car seats and we needed to run three across.

The Diesel forums are full of great information on the various engines/transmission and what if any known problems they have.

Great info, thanks! I talked to a guy at work who told me to stay away from anything between 2002 and 2011 because of all kinds of problems. He had a 2002 and loved it. He wanted a dually so traded up for a dodge. It's too bad the used ford diesels seem so much cheaper than the other brands. If I could afford it I would go new and have more options.

I have a 08 F350 with around 78000 miles on it. It has the 6.4 engine. I have had no problems with the truck. I would not go with the 6.0 engine, many problems with them as noted above.

I have owned an 03 for 4 years now and have not had any issues, but I have learned a lot as to why. All the comments above are good info and true of many of the problematic issues that arise. That being said there are a few owners that have had no issues and mostly due to the setup, preventive maintenance and constant monitoring of our engines. You can't just get in, turn the key every day and hope that strictly oil changes are going to keep you in the clear. With the 6.0 the main culprit in our engines are 2 components. The oil and EGR coolers. In my generation I have a round EGR cooler with better fins for cooling unlike the 04 and above which went to the square radiator style cooler fins. What happens to these engines in most cases is that the fins clog with coolant deposits and restrict the flow of coolant, thus creating a chain reaction that leads to head failure and all the other list of issues.

The oil coolers start to go first as they act like a filter for the coolant and this will start to show on your delta between oil and coolant temps. Once this delta goes above the benchmark of 20 degrees it usually climbs rapidly over time and eventually leads to blown heads. In most cases it starts to show around 50K if the previous owner did not address and maintain correctly. The only fix is to replace the oil cooler and egr, cleaning does not get enough of it out and only buys you a short period of relief. I have had a coolant filter on mine since owning and I did a complete flush and change of all fluids when I bought it. I flush and change my coolant every 20K and my delta runs about 16-18 degrees when under load and at highway speeds which indicates that my oil cooler is still fairly clean and exchanging heat correctly.

The only way you are going to know if the oil cooler is good is if you run it down the highway at 65 MPH for an extended run after it is at 190 degrees on both temps. A secondary temp gauge is the only way to see these true temps. This is the main reason they are priced so much lower than the rest of the diesels out there, but if you have a way to confirm this you might score a decent truck for a decent price. If you cannot confirm the temps then buyer beware.

A new oil cooler is cheap it's just getting it in that is the problem and takes the better part of 2 days.

The 2002 Ford Super Duty pickups used a 7.3 PowerStroke Diesel engine. I owned a 1996 F-250 Heavy Duty. The engine was also a 7.3 but of what I call "an older generation". The most frequent occurring problem with mine was the Camshaft Positioning Sensor (CPS). I replaced this at least twice in the 13 years and 133,000 miles I owned this pickup. When the CPS failed, it was usually suddenly and the engine either died or ran so rough that it was undrivable. For that reason, some owners carried a spare CPS and the necessary tools to change it. Glow plugs were a problem too. I don't think any of mine were functioning when I traded it in. It can be a challenge to start the engine without glow plugs once the temperature gets down below freezing.

Somewhere around 2010-2011 Ford began putting their current version of the PowerStroke diesel, the 6.7, in their Super Duty pickups. The 6.7 diesel is the first "Ford built" PowerStroke diesel. All the PowerStroke diesels built pervious to this engine were built for Ford by International (Navistar).

Not many good reports on the Ford 6.0 .. go for it only if it is the newer 6.4

The "new" Ford 6.7l diesel is found in 2011-current Ford diesel trucks. The "new" engine has been the most reliable since the 7.3l, which was last manufactured in mid 2003. I have 61K on my 2012 6.7l F350 crew cab and it has never been to a Ford dealer for anything other than routine maintenance. I tow a 2014 32BHDS and a 14K construction trailer with a farm tractor. Plenty of power and very quiet and clean. No black diesel smoke at all. The only negative I've found is the fuel tank is 26 gal instead of 35. I have always been a Dodge and Chevy guy. This is my first Ford. I love this truck!

My 6.0 is a joy to drive. I did have the oil cooler problem that is common but it was all covered by the extended warranty, Just turned 81k and a pulling machine on the outside and comfortable ride on the inside.

The last couple of years of the 6.0 were fairly good as they had the bugs worked out. The 6.4 was only used for a short time for a good reason. The 6.7 seems to be the one to have if you want a newer truck.

When the buying is all over you might find yourself saying "I could'a had a Ram".

Thanks for all the info, it's helping with my research. I spoke to guy today with a 2007 he had since new. No engine problems...lots of minor problems...biggest problem he mentioned was gas tank is plastic, and somehow something got clogged and the tank collapsed in on itself. It was still under warranty, and they replaced filter while the tank was out. That was new to me. I appreciate all the feedback and hope you keep adding it here for me. Thanks!

I have a 2011 Ford with the new 6.7L Powerstroke. I only have 28k miles on it so far and nothing but good things to report. It's a pulling machine and like stated before, very quiet and clean. I love my truck and wouldn't trade it for anything else!

I drive a 2006 6.0 and love it. There are a lot of good replies here. The most important thing to monitor is the engine coolant temp vs. oil coolant temp difference, delta in temps. Ford specs 15 degree difference. If you test drive one, I highly suggest picking up a scangauge 2 and monitor these temps. Truck needs to be warmed up, 60mph driving on flat ground to get your deltas. If temp difference is greater than 15 degrees the oil cooler is clogged and on its way out. Left as is will lead to very bad, bad things as described above. My oil cooler was on its way out, then upgraded it to a Bulletproof Diesel remote oil and egr cooler and will never have to worry about this again. Go to powerstroke.org, very informative about the 6.0.

I had to look up scangauge, could be a good purchase to save me from headaches down the road.

I went to a ford dealer today. His advice was for me to stay away from the 6.0 trucks. Then of course he tried selling me a new F-150

Must not have had one for sale. Wonder what they would say had one been on the lot?

Maybe take a look at Duramax and CTDs. I really like driving my Duramax, many like the Ram CTD -- as mentioned if the rear seat would have better accommodated 3 car seats I would have given it a serious look too.

They had one on the lot, when I asked about the 6.0 thing he said that the only way they took it in was because it had about 6000 work done to remedy all the issues. It was a 2004. It was out of my price range.

I'm looking at all the possibilitys I can. I've read some good info regarding Duramax and Cummins.

Every single ford out there couldn't possibly be a lemon? I had a 2002 ranger new. During the first month it stalled on a logging road leaving us waiting for a tow. With weekend trip ruined, truck towed to dealer, ended up being gas cut off switch engaged after hitting a Small pothole. The switch, or button, just had to be pushed in so the truck could be started. But no one figured it out till it was in the shop. Then I was advised the module was so cheap and the replacements were worse so I should just insert a paper clip to prevent the switch from activating. I forgot about that till now.
