First impressions towing with the Ford 6.2L

I purchased my 2017 F-250 gasser back in November so I really didn't have a chance to tow with it until recently. We took our first somewhat long trip for us at 70 miles. The F-250 did well but the truck definitely knew the trailer was back there as we towed in a 20 mph cross wind. Here are some things I'd like to relay to the Forum. Our Eagle weighs 9,200lbs with 1,395 lbs on the tongue. According to the truck computer our fuel economy was 9.5 mpg. I am running premium fuel as the owners manual calls for when towing heavy. The terrain was flat/rolling but no long uphill grades. I didn't expect this kind of fuel economy pulling this king of weight with a gas motor so I was pleased. Another concern of mine was transmission temps of this new 6r100 TorqShift G transmission. Before I towed anything with this truck I was seeing transmission temps in the 199 to 203 range, especially going down the Interstate at 80 mph. I'm happy to report that I never saw a temp over 203 while towing with ambient temp of 87* @ 65mph. Whew! Also this is my first vehicle with a backup camera w/zoom. Unbelievably easy to hook up now! So far the only downside I experienced while towing is the lack of low end torque but I expected that. Overall very pleased with the towing experience so far. The truck is big, comfortable and functional. Thanks for listening.

I towed my 328 with a 2012 F250 6.2. Didn't have a problem with it at all. Liked to wind up going up hills but, that means it's working! Congrats!

I'm happy that you posted your trans temps. I'm also seeing 200 on a daily basis on the 1/2 ton and was concerned that this wasn't normal. Apparently they design them to run on that range.

We just returned from a 2 week trip from KS to Eastern TN pulling our 28.5 RSTS FW with our 2017 F250 6.2 gasser. Couldn’t be more pleased. The FW weighs right at 9800 lbs loaded. For the most part, we set the cruise on 65, sat back and relaxed. In the hills with long pulls, we maintained between 55-65 mph and never dropped below 4th gear even on the longest pull. Never saw over 207 degrees on the transmission temp. Generally ran around 196 to 200 degrees. For the 2200 mile round trip, we averaged 8.5 mpg. That includes traversing the flint hills in KS and the hills of TN. Did I mention very pleased?

I have a 2018 F250 with the 6.2 and 4.30 gears. My first trip was pulling a 7,000 lb travel trailer from Columbus, OH to St. Louis and back. Many of the smaller grades were in 6th gear. There’s no mountains to be sure but some decent grades along the way where it dropped to 5th or 4th for a short time. BTW, 65 mph is at 2,000 rpm with this axle. I got about 9mpg. Towing with this is great.

I tow close to 12,400lbs with my 6.2 gasser and have NO problems at all and have been doing it since 2012. We live in Arizona so we pull to California, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Nevada, not much flat in any of those states. The F-250 pulls well, rides well and the milage is no worse than anyone else out there. Everyone says I'm over weight and dangerous, but I've been in some pretty close calls on I-10 between Phoenix and LA and so far I've been able to stop and accelerate without any problems. I hate LA traffic, but have not had any problems there either. Good solid, hard working truck for my money. Had a 8.1 Chevy before and thought the world of the Allison transmission, however the Ford traney does and excellent job of letting me down some pretty good grades without every using the brake. I love my Ford!

We only get out 5-6 times a year so I opted for the 3.73 rear end. Plus the deal was too good to pass up. I think if you're towing a lot the 4.30's are the only way to go. I came from a '12 F-250 with the 6.7L diesel power plant so I didn't have a lot of expectations with this gas motor. It is a pleasant surprise and you are correct, towing with this is great! On Ford 6R100 auto trans, there is a 'thermostat' that regulates flow to the cooler, and prevents trans temps below about 190f. I installed an ARE pan on my 2015 F150 2.7eb and have seen consistent 198-202 temps while towing. Before, was seeing 200-208. Remember, you have full synthetic fluid and it works better with a little heat.

Now that is one beautiful truck! Kinda looks like this one. I've spent about $800 on mods for the truck including Husky mud flaps/floor mats but the best one is the DeeZee tailgate assist. Just open it and let the tailgate slide down. Love it

I would like to know what mileage you are getting with the 6.2L in the city and on the road when you are not towing. Also would like to know when the current 6.2L went into service. Thanks in advance.

I get 13 in town and maybe 15 on the highway in my 2017 F-250 6.2L, but I rarely drive on the highway when not towing.

I believe the 6.2 design that's in the current Super Duty trucks is from 2011 along with the truck redesign that same year. I could be wrong here...I'm not that much of a Ford historian.

F250 SD was same config 2008-2016.
Latest rendition is 2017-2018 design with all aluminum construction and improved performance/mileage (not that it counts for much).

Are you sure about that? I thought the "2nd gen" super dutys were the short lived 08-10 model years and still had the 6.8L V10. "3rd gen" was 11-16 and the current versions "4th gen" trucks are the 17+ alumiduty.
