Ford 6.2 gas vs 6.7 diesel

I am currently looking at upgrading my TV. I don't know much about the 6.2 motor. This will also be my daily driver. I have had diesels in the past so am aware of higher maintenance costs etc. and have owned all 3 major brands. I will not go back to a Duramax. Just looking for general discussion and advice.

Our experience with our '15 Ram 2500 with Cummings Diesel has been great so far. We were also surprised at the non-towing mileage of 15 to 17mpg, and love its ability to pull our 9,000lbs FW up a hill with ease. We also love the exhaust brake when coming down a steep grade too.

I'm also in the same boat... my F150's payload is almost maxed out. Since my TV is also my daily driver and my commute to work and back isn't long, gas is a better option for me. People seem to love their 6.2s. My Dad had it in his F150 Harley Edition and found the mileage to be fairly decent. Not far off from his current 3.5 Eco. But... that was a lighter truck then an SD.

We bought a 2017 F250 Lariat 6.2 gasser with 3.73 gears this past November. It has 2238 non-towing miles on it so far. The gas mileage has been 13 around town and 14 to 15 on the highway. We opted for it over the 6.7 diesel mainly due to the 15 to 20 mile distance to work when used for that and the additional costs associated with a diesel. We are anxiously waiting to see how it does pulling our 7500 lb TT this year. My neighbor bought a new Ram 2500 Cummings diesel and after a short while bought a used Ranger to use for his short daily commute to work. Very happy with our truck so far.

How heavy are you towing? What does your daily commute look like?

My daily commute is under 20miles. 3-4 times a week. We work 12's.

I traded a 2012 Ram 2500 Cummins for my 2015 F-150. Of course we end up buying a camper 8 months afterwards.

I take my truck in tomorrow for warranty work and the dealer has a F-350 SRW super cab Lariat that was special ordered and not accepted that's a 6.2 and I really like what I saw of it online. I'm going to put eyes on it tomorrow.

The 6.2 is a fine engine and battle tested but expect it to struggle pulling hills [as with any gas engine on the market today] with that kind of weight. Also expect 6-8 mpg's towing depending on terrain/weather conditions. My 6.7 gets 12 towing the same weight and maintains speed on hills, but with your short commute, I would go with gas unless you could buy a used car for a daily driver. I have an old Subaru as my DD. The towing difference between gas/diesel is night/day but you can't treat todays diesels as grocery getters. Best of luck in your decision.

I just pulled the trigger on a New F 350 with a 6.2 . I ordered it with 430 gears, after driving both 373 and 430 it was day and night

Turbo Diesel is the only way to go if you plan on traveling the country\countries. Elevation changes are not a problem for a turbo.

I prefer the 6.7L to the 6.2L but the Cummins is all I will ever buy again.

I am on my third and all of them hit over 400K before I traded\sold them.

I lean more towards diesel just from having had them before and know the torque and power are greater. Just haven't heard much about the 6.2 from anyone much less people that pull.

I was thinking of having the 3.73 changed to 4.10 in the future. I heard there was a substantial difference.

When I was shopping I drove those two engines back to back.

I started out driving the 6.2 (coming from the V-10) and found it to be an equal. But then I drove the 6.7 and Twice I inadvertently squawked the tires. The additional power (and torque) sold me.

My daily driver is a small hatchback so no concerns there.

I am currently driving an F350 6.7 2WD SB. We pull a 5th that scales 12,700# with 3,000# on the pin. I have no 6.2 experience so I cant compare, but I can't imagine it giving me the performance the diesel does. Recently retired so I only commuted a few months, abt 20 mi each way. Mileage is not bad empty or towing (18/12 highway). As long as I have a heavy trailer I'll have a diesel, and it'll be a Ford (it's just how I'm wired). Previously we towed 4400# HTT with an Expe 5.4 gasser. We pulled the old HTT a couple of times with the 350 and it did it with ease. Upgrading to the 5th I was expecting to feel it grunt under the load but was amazed at how well it pulls. I won't tell the "can't tell it's back there" lie but I will say, "there's no replacement for torque".

Have the 6.2L w/3.73 rear in the Truck listed below. I pulled a 5er just over 7000 miles last year. 5er is 9700 lbs. by CAT scale. ( I do need to change my Signature TT but I have a SOB)

Big trip was from Southeastern Pa to Colorado, then back thru Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, WV then home. Average mileage during trip 9.8 MPG. Also trip to mountains of North Carolina and another trip to Maine & New Hampshire. Average mileage again was 9.8-10.0 mpg.

My daily commute is 5 miles each way. 5 Traffic lights & 2 Stop signs, so no 'long runs'. Average mileage for work is 10.6. Much higher mileage on weekends when running up to my Camp in NE PA.

Does not struggle on most Hills, can always maintain the speed limit.Really long steady climbs it hits 4000-4800 rpms and it does get a bit noisy. I do wish I had a Diesel when I stop to Fuel up, it does make it easier to use RV or Truck lanes. Is a Diesel in my future? Probably when I retire next year and tow more.

Hope this gives you an idea what the 6.2 can do!

Thank you for the input. I know a gasser isn't going to compare to a diesel, but I think with as far as I'm going to go I should be fine. We are in New Mexico so will just be traveling for sight seeing more than anything else and the occasional trip to OK and MO to see family.

I had a 2014 2500 5.7L with the 3.73 gears and now I have the 2016 2500 6.4L with the 4.10 gears and it is like day and night, it does like all gasser have a high rpm pulling but that's is what they do.

If you do go gas and will go for the 4.10 gears if you can, I had to order mines but I'm glad I did. My TT is about 10,000 lbs and it pull it like no tomorrow but not as good as the diesel of course but I'm happy.

My mileage unloaded on the highway is around 16-17 but towing it's about 10 mpg because I haven't pull any big hills. Is a diesel in my future, probably not but I'm happy with my 6.4L Hemi.

I had a 2001 F-250 with the 8cyl gas moter that I traded in for a 2004 F-350 with the 6.0 L diesel. Ran that up to about 180k and traded that in on my 2015 F-350 with the 6.7.

Here are my thoughts - a gas engine can pull any load that Ford considers within the specifications. It may loose some steam going up hills and may be slower off the line, but it will get it done. It doesn't make it any less safe. If you are ok with losing steam and going slower sometimes, then you'd be fine. I know way too many people that think you have to be able to do 15mph over the speed limit up the side of a mountain in order to be considered "safe".

I have always chosen a 350 over the 250 for the additional capacity. There is so little price difference, why not? I don't think that it rides that much differently. Too many people with overloaded F-250's out there that do so because of a personal perception of the difference between the two models.

When my 6.0l was getting close to the time where I was going to have to drop some major $$$ into the engine, I went and did a test drive. One drive of the 6.7L PSD sold me. There were a lot of comfort changes between my 2004 and the 2015 and the engine is just amazing. With my 04, if I got stuck behind a semi in the right lane doing 25mph up a mountain, I was stuck there. Couldn't accelerate fast enough to safely pull out around it. The 6.7 has gobs of power, the transmission handles it very well and is a pleasure to drive and problem free to date (85k miles).

While I could get by with a gasser, I have grown to expect the power from a diesel. I'm spoiled now.
