Ford Reviews

We purchased a 2020 Ford Explorer with a tow package. Our trailer weight is 3400 lbs.
My question is has anyone pulled with a 4 cylinder motor?

The quick answer is "if properly equipped", it should tow up to 5600 lbs.

I can not find any reviews on towing. Nothing on you tube no reviews. This 2.3 has power driving. Just driving not pulling.

Rated at 5300lbs with the 2.3L. That said, I have no actual experience, but it's going to feel like a dog towing. Peak HP doesn't come in until 5500 rpm. Can it safely and sufficiently tow a 3400 lbs trailer? Sounds like it. Will it get there fast? No way.

Can you manually control the gears on the Explorer? If so, try to keep the RPMs up and see if it feels more capable.

Key thing to do, is look on the drivers door jam for a yellow sticker. My new passenger car is a white with yellow highlights. This sticker will tell you all the basics you need to know about the towing and payload capacity of your Explore, as it rolled out of the factory.

My old Ranger was a 4 cylinder. I did not tow a lot with it, as it had a very low tow rating.

Just like the TV commercial says “Wow I could have had a V-8” nothing better than having extra power if you need it....

I've towed my 212qb at just under 5k with my 2017 Explorer which had the V6. No issues with it at all, although I only ever drive a couple of hours at the most and never highway (though I was up to 55-60mph). No issues with wind, minor hills, etc.

Not sure how the 4cyl will work. Body wise and mechanical, we were fine.

This is a Turbo 2.3L 4cyl with 300hp. It's a better choice than the naturally aspirated 6cyl that was previously offered. It's also mated to a 10spd tranny. It will probably be okay, if I had to judge. I have a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 Explorer and while I use the F150 for my heavy towing, the Explorer does a good job with the smaller stuff. I would think a 3400lb trailer would mean a single axle, 7 foot wide, 14-18foot range trailer... It will probably do okay... you will be shocked at the fuel burn, and may have to hold it wide open on big hills. Watch your transmission temps. It's not ideal, but it'll get it done.
