Give me some reasons why or why not...

Good morning all,

I've got a 2018 264BHW (my second model - 4600 dry weight) that I pull with my '05 Ford F-150 (5.4 V8). My truck has a tow max of 8200 and I estimate that I never pull over 6500 - 6800 when camping.

This F-150 is also my everyday drive and I get approximately 17 mpg on a normal day and around 10+- mpg when towing. I have always thought that this truck has pulled my travel trail fairly well, even in and through the Appalachian Mountains where I live.

As the cost of gas here in western North Carolina is currently 2.45 (diesel 2.90) I usually fill up for around $50. I can change the oil/filters myself for less than $30 and I usually go camping at least 5-7 times per year.

What would be the advantage(s) or disadvantages of trading in for an F-250 (05 - 10 model) in terms of daily use, costs of fuel, mileage, towing, etc.?

Thanks!

Take your truck and trailer and trailer to a CAT scale and confirm that you are within all necessary weight ratings, GVWR, Payload, Etc. If you are and you are happy with your current truck, there is absolutely no need to trade on something else at this point.

If your happy with what you got, keep it. F150s ride (daily) better than a F250s. Most all 1/2 tons are equipped with passenger tires that will require max pressure when towing. At 30psi with P rated tires (standard) vs 60psi and harder truck tires you will loose the ride comfort that the DW loves.

You didn’t say if you were upgrading to a diesel or sticking with gas 3/4 ton. If diesel, do A LOT of homework on whatever year model you are considering. Ford offered the 6.0L in 05-07 and the 6.4L in 08-10. My personal opinion is to stay away from the 6.4L. The 6.0L can be bulletproofed to be a reliable vehicle with upgrades. The 6.4L on the other hand, cannot be. Check out the ford truck enthusiasts forum to learn more.

None, unless you plan on upgrading to a larger and heavier trailer.

Magnolia Tom is spot on here. If you are considering a ford diesel check out powerstroke.org it is a great place for information.

Now either engine will cost you money, but the 6.0 is a pay once and fix it right job where if done right the engine will last. The 6.4 is not able to be fixed from it's failures yet (it may never be) and when it does go wrong (which it will) will be a very expensive repair and the start of a new clock for the same problems.

'Assuming' that your present F-150 TV/TT combination is within specified weight limits and the WDH rating/adjustment is dialed-in, plus meets your towing expectations..., IMO it might be difficult justifying the F-250.

The F-250 will exhibit a firmer daily ride experience, higher fuel costs, lower MPG, but "enhanced" payload capacity and handling/towing characteristics would be experienced.

Jayco website has a 2018/SLX-8 264BH @ 6,000lb GVWR and a 2017/SLX 264BHW @ 6,500lb GVWR........., the earlier JOF member recommendation of a CAT visit would confirm your weights and may influence your F-250 thoughts.

Advantage: You want a new truck, bigger truck
Disadvantage: money,

It sounds like there is nothing wrong with your current setup/ towing experience. You just want to keep up with the Jones.

199LIB-
You seem to be satisfied with your F150 so stick with it. A CAT scale will be your friend and indicate your current weights when loaded.

BTW, I was in 198th LIB in Vietnam, many, many moons ago. Thanks for your service .

Happy RVing,
Jeff

Advantage: Noticeably improved handling and braking performance...at least that was my experience going from a Chevy 1500 to 2500HD with the same TT and hitch.

If you do a lot of mountain pass travel, A 2500 would have bigger brakes. But if your not having any issues with the 150, save your money for a new toy of some sort!

I personally upgraded from a 15' F-150 3.5L EB to a 17' F-250 6.2L gasser. Worlds apart in drive quality and performance. My 150 was quick and nimble and got around 15mpg city. My 250 is big and solid and gets around 11mpg city. 150 is a GREAT daily driver - 250 is a great work truck. If you're concerned about towing or payload, get the 250. If you just need enough truck to pull that TT down the road now and then, stick with the 150.

If you wait a few months the 2020 7.3L F-250 will be available.
