GM Integrated Brake Controller ITBC

Looking at the owner's manual for my new GMC truck with the integrated brake controller it indicates the following for the controller setup:
"1. Drive the vehicle with trailer attached on a level road surface...and fully apply the Manual Trailer Brake Apply Lever.
2.Adjust the trailer gain, using the trailer gain adjustment buttons, to just below the point of wheel lock-up, indicated by trailer wheel squeal or tire smoke when a trailer wheel locks."
It seems a little drastic to smoke the trailer tires to find the optimum gain setting. Anybody else use this method? Anybody suggest another method that has worked for them?

Agreed.....that seems a little extreme. I just went with a feel method, and 5.5 on the gain works for me. (I do have the GM ITBC)

I am also at 5.5-6.0 on my controller.

I run mine on 4. Check it when pulling out from parking it and just squeeze it to stop the trailer. Don't lock up the brakes and then back off, just make sure that it will slow us down as we are driving around. I might have to move it up to a 5 just to see if it is better, but so far no problems.

Open road 4, heavy traffic 5. Hope I never need to use the lockup feature on my GMC .

Thanks for the input, guys. KYCAMPER, I agree that the recommendation in the manual seems extreme. We just upgraded our TV to a 2015 GMC Duramax with the integrated brake controller so I'll start out at 5 and go from there.
