GVWR on title/registration

How do dealers decide how to title/register a vehicle? I’m on my second truck from the same dealer, and noticed it’s registered at 10,100 lbs GVWR. It’s a 3500. My last truck was registered at 9 or 9100 maybe. Seems odd it wouldn’t be manufacturer GWVR. Doesn’t bother me one way or another as I’m not doing anything commercial. Just curious.

It might be something to do with the state. I also have a 3500HD SRW and the registration shows a little over 13K. I'm in Florida.

How does the VIN identify the GVWR

Definitely varies by state. In WI it seems to be the dealer's discretion. There are A, B, and C weight classifications for light trucks. I have a 1500 but with a C classification because the dealer felt since I tow a travel trailer he didn't think I should go with a lower weight class.

I don't think the dealer decides I had Reg car plates issued to me on my 2005 F 150. I transferred the plates to a 2015 F 150 max tow. I recently got my renewal notice. I'm rated class C. 1 Got my sticker (by mail) but no class c sticker for my plates that don't say truck on them. So how does that work?

We're in OH. Here's our rate chart. We have what is called a 3/4 ton,(an F 250) but as we all know, that number doesn't mean anything. 3/4 ton capacity would be 1500#, and we know our payload is about 2500#. But anyway, the clerk rated us as a 3/4 ton capacity- the lowest price for a pickup truck. So we're happy with that.

In MA it's not listed on our registration and Commercial vs. Passenger depends on usage. Most 350/3500 that I see are registered as commercial, but that said I also see a ton of 150/1500 with commercial plates. A lot of dealers try to tell you that commercial are required on a 350/3500, but that's not the case.

With a GVWR of 12,400 I'm definitely into the "heavy" weight classification, but run passenger plates

Ran into this in Texas. I was taking my driving test for Class A (non-commercial) and the agent told me my registration GVWR did not match my door pillar label. Ram dually registration sez 8100 while door sez 14000. While renewing registration, county clerk informed me that I could register it for whatever weight I wanted. I would then pay the rate for that weight. I left it at 8100. Who am I to argue?

But if you get caught with more than the 8100, can you get a ticket because you paid for and registered for up to 8100?
In Michigan we dont have our trucks registered by weight. It's done by base value.
Commercial trucks are done by weight though.

Oregon registration renewal for 2 years is $112.00 same price for any vehicle,regardless of if its a 1959 rambler, or a 2019 ford f-350. same price.. except a commercial vehicles. with a commercial license plates are at a different rate. R.V.'s in Oregon are charged by length. example my 20 footer was $ 148.00 for 2 years.

Actually that's my point. It's not clear what constitutes the weight class. Car plates? I've seen truck plates on passenger cars in WI, but never the other way around.

Probably not in Texas. DOT only cares about weights for commercial vehicles. If you have a commercial vehicle registered at 14,000 lbs and it's carrying 14,001 lbs, you get a ticket. To my understanding, it's more about the money, and less about the technical engineering capacities of the vehicle.

My dad had that argument with his customers all the time. They wanted to register vehicles at 10,000 lbs because it was cheaper to do so, knowing full well they planned to load the truck to its engineered capacities. He had to tell them all the time that if they did that, and got caught over weight (which is likely out here as troopers carry portable scales), he wasn't paying the ticket.

I stand corrected. I contacted dot today. As I have handicap plates there is no room for the weight class sticker. They issue standard car plates. Class is determined by weight sticker on door. As I purchased new truck thru dealer they provided sticker info to dmv So there I (we) have it
