Hemi
So I think I've finally decided on my new TV. I'm looking at a Dodge Ram Mega Cab 1500 SXT with the heavy duty package. It has the 3.73 in the rear, short wide bed, automatic transmission. My current trailer is 7800lbs full loaded (26bh), with no current plans to upgrade. I can't find the SXT HD package online anywhere to get a definite on tow ratings to see where it is, and I've also heard the transmissions in the 5.7 Hemi's are weak. What are your comments or thoughts?

My wife's truck is the same truck as you are looking at. I am not a fan of towing much with it. We have towed our 27 foot car hauler with it and it struggles. The hemi, although lots of horsepower, has the power band in the wrong spot. It is always hunting for the right gear and as a result gets horrible mileage with a trailer hooked up. I mean horrible....
FYi I am a true blue Dodge guy and my wife's truck is a hoot to drive otherwise.
We tow with our 3500 instead.

Welcome to JOF
Do have one question, you mentioned that your 2015 26BH is 7,800lbs "loaded", but the GVWR is only 7,000lbs......., is the 7,800lb figure correct?

I've towed my 26BH with my 1500 HEMI for nearly 40K miles. I had a 2010 2500 Ram Cummins before the HEMI, and towed my Jayco another 30K miles with it. The Cummins was a better TV, but the HEMI does a great job.
Sure, the engine RPMs run higher going over mountain passes, but on the long, level stretches, it runs around 2000 rpm at 60mph without any strain or struggle.
It averages about 11 mpg towing, same as the Cummins did. I highly recommend a Ram HEMI for towing a 26BH, from my personal experience.
In order to prevent gear-hunting, I always put it into tow/haul mode, and drop it into 4th gear. Runs like a champ.

If you get a new Ram it will have the ZF 8 sp auto which is getting great reviews. A huge improvement over the older 5 or 6 automatics both in strength and choice of gear ratios.

Its a 6.4 Hemi. The only concern I would like to pass along is a low payload on Ram 1500's. Make sure your numbers are okay before you buy it new.

Ram doesn't make a 6.2 Hemi. Ram makes a 6.4 Hemi. You suggested he buy an engine that doesn't exist. I was simply trying to correct a simple mistake.

Is it super charged or twin turbo. I've heard both.

I have a 2008 hemi its a great puller. In tow haul mode I run between 50-55 around 2000 rpm, handles my 10,000 pound 5th wheel with ease. I have the SXT in the 2500. Pretty flat where I tow and I rarely go over 3,000 rpm. Awesome engine, my next tow vehicle will have the 6.4 hemi most likely.
