Unfortunately you can't turn it down. It's a fixed 140 degree thermostat. You'd have to replace it with a lower value thermostat. Just be aware that's there's two thermostats that control the temperature. One for gas and one for electric if you have a combo water heater.

I replaced my electric side with a 150 degree thermostat because I wanted the hot water to last longer but there's 130 degree thermostats available also.

There's also an adjustable thermostat on the market but I don't remember which side of the water heater it's for. I'll bet somebody else that has replaced it can set me straight.

This might be worth a try. Depending on how your water heater bypass valves are setup, you may be able to open the bypass valve a little bit allow cold water to pass thru and mix with the hot water output on your water header, effectively reducing the temperature a little bit. You do want to still make sure however that water can flow into the waterheater at all times, last thing you want to do is have a situation where its empty and turned on, you can burn it out in seconds on electric.

I have not tried this but have thought about it. I usually just turn on the hot water valve at the shower/sink a very little bit and then turn on the cold a LOT more to get it to a lukewarm temperature.
