How Install Hitch on '08 Jay Feather LGT 31v

I just bought my first TT and it's an 08 Jay Feather LGT 31v. I want to put a hitch hauler on it to carry my bike and kayak but there isn't a real bumper. It is a plastic faux bumper. The frame cross member is about 8" behind the faux bumper and it is a thin metal that bends when I tried to attach a hitch to it. I'm assuming I will have to go to a welding shop and have them attach something to the main frame rails that go from front to back. Any suggestions on what to do?

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your first TT.

IMO, find a way to mount something to the FRONT of the TT or on the tow vehicle, not behind the TT. IIRC, the frames for some years of Jay Feathers are very light duty so attaching/welding to it may be a problem. In addition, addling weight to the rear of a TT increases SWAY tendency A LOT!

It would be helpful to let us know the tow vehicle you plan on using.

If you are talking about adding light weight items, then it would be worth while to have some one add extensions on the frame. And add a 4 or 5 inch square tubing as a bumper.

My brother had this done on his and it works really well. But like I said he hauls a few bikes and maybe a cooler. (Light stuff).

Remember your TW is already around 840 lbs. and the max. on the A-Frame is 975 lbs.
The TT is balanced pretty well in its standard condition. So any modification on either the front or the back you also have to compensate for balance.

Take it to a shop that knows what they are doing with hitches and have it welded on to the trailer frame. I just replied to someone else that had nearly the same question. Make sure they extend the hitch receiver out a little past the back of the bumper so you have space for the handlebars - you don't want them bouncing up and hitting the back of the trailer. I paid $375 for the hitch/install. Make sure you have a heavy duty rack too. Here is mine - https://www.walmart.com/ip/Tow-Tuff-...waAlc4EALw_wcB No problems in 1000's of miles -

Same answer as nunyadamn. In Charleston, we have a business called Corbins Hitch Shop. They can fabricate or find a pre-made hitch that will be as strong as the frame it's attached to. They have sold me several hitches, welded a hitch on my last fifth wheel and wired the lights, etc.

I'm sure there is one like it in your area. With any luck he may be a Gamecock fan!!
