Installing Disc Brakes on a Pinnacle

I have a Ford Super Duty with the factory brake controller and am pulling a Pinnacle 36REQS. I have the brake controller set on maximum gain, and am not able to adjust the gain to "just under" locking up the camper brakes. According to the truck owners manual, this is normal for heavier campers. Mine is about 13K loaded. I have simulated an emergency braking situation, and am not comfortable with the stopping distance. I am considering installing disc brakes on the Pinnacle. I am looking for feedback from anyone who has gone this route. Another option would be installing an aftermarket brake controller with higher gain than the factory brake controller, but I prefer not going that route.

Here is a place to start and the search feature at the top of the page, in the gold bar, will find you more. I pulled this up there.

I had them installed on the Cyclone, when I had it, and would never go back to drum. For the life of me I cannot think of the installer, but they do make various RV meets and do on the spot installs or did, at one time, come to your door step and to the install. Someone will recall the name or I may be able to find it in my contacts. I'm looking.

Heres a thread I did on my conversion

https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...mod-73495.html

My 15 silverado, I had the controller cranked all the way up and it still didnt stop very well on the factory drum set up. Now, I got my factory controller down to 6.7 to 7 and it stops really good. One of the best mods I've done and well worth it!
Do it, and you'll never look back.

Are the brakes on the camper adjusted properly? No increase in gain on the controller is going to fix improperly adjusted brakes at the wheels.

We are taking delivery of a 2021 Pinnacle 36FBTL next month. It is loaded but no disk brakes. Another member here had it done to theirs using this same company and they were very pleased with it. I have bought the brake conversion, or should say paid for it, and they send an install person to your location, very neat. We are scheduled to have it done sometime in October. Good luck

I have not checked the adjustment since they are supposedly self adjusting brakes. I bought it with about 2000 miles on it, and the brakes work the same as when I bought it, but I guess it is possible the self adjustment doesn't work and that they weren't adjusted correctly from the factory.

Regarding full gain on the brake controller, most all brake controllers provide full voltage (your 12v system voltage) at max braking. You can test the voltage at the trailer connector and have a helper manually engage the brake controller to its furthest extreme (although some brake controllers need to be connected first). Point being, is that if you have the 12v (more likely around ~13.6 with the engine running) out of the controller, then that is the max voltage (gain) that you can get and any other brake controller will not deliver more gain (voltage). ~CA
