Jump a Chevy Duramax D

Ordered a new pair of batteries for my 2010 Duramax 2500 on Thur and should get them tomorrow or Wed. Started to notice a little weakness when I started on these cold mornings so had the batteries tested. Bingo, time to replace. I have my fingers crossed when I start the beast to take it over for the new batteries. It started ok this am and I let it run for a few minutes. Now my question: I know the 2 batteries are wired in parallel so the system stays at 12v but thinking it doubles up the amp output. If I waited one day to long and the batteries won't start things can I jump the thing? Do I just hook up to one of the batteries and in effect throw a 3d battery into the stack?

Jump starting instructions for my 06 F250 Powerstroke is to hook up the jumper cables to the secondary battery, which is the passenger side battery. Just follow the instructions for cable hook up, + to +, - to frame ground. If using a gas vehicle as the charging vehicle, be prepared to wait a while for the batteries in the diesel to charge. The glow plug cycle will use a lot of power.

24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not.

Yes you just hook up to one of the two batteries, doesn’t matter which one, as they’re wired in parallel and act as one big 12v battery.

Plug it in (block Heater) when you can and it won't take as many amps cranking when it is so cold!

Never had a problem even when overnite temps have been minus temps. I got the truck in Oct 2013 and so batteries are at least 4 years and I suspect older. Suspect it just time and the recent cold weather has just put the fork in it. New batteries tomorrow I hope.

On my 05 Duramax there are places (near the driver side battery) to hook up a battery charger. One pos and one neg so no need to hook up directly to either battery.

That means they are probably there on my 2010 but I can't find them. Any more specific location info?

A little off topic but...
The batteries on the TV needed replacing this past September while we were on our 6 week road trip. We were headed to town, hopped in, turned the key and was rewarded with “click-click-click”.
I went to the CG office and asked if he could give me a jump. He said “sure” and suggested I borrow his jump start booster. Roughly shaped like a brick with 2 short leads with alligator clips on them (like jumper cables). I’m thinking this thing might start a Honda but flip over the 6.7, never.
Short story, it worked like a champ. I ordered 3 when we got home, one for each of our cars and the third for our son.

I am on my 3d jump box and it is several years old and lost a lot of its punch. All these thing are is an ATV style battery in a nice plastic case with short jumper cables. Some have 12v cig outlets and even weak compressors. I've found that the simpler the better but it just like any other battery. What is the cranking amps?? A small battery will handle a Honda but not a big engine on a cold am. The last one I bought came from tractor supply and had the most power of any that I have seen.

This has got me thinking that I need to step up and get a new one.

Those small brck jump starters are usually Lithium batteries. They have a lot of current capability, but, they will not start a stone dead diesel (ie, not even enough juice for lights). They will work if your batteries are just low.

PS use your block heater if you have one. I also keep a battery charger around just in case.
