Legality of Covering Towed Vehicle License Plate ?

Hi there. I'm planning to get a yellow "vehicle in tow" plate for our Ford Edge.

The suction cups included to mount them inside the rear window get pretty mixed reviews.
I thought it would be almost as quick, more secure and more visible to remove the top two license plate mounting screws and attach the in tow plate over the license plate. Quick to reverse the process when ready to detach the car also.

Is it legal ?

Thoughts ? Other options ?

Thanks

You're going to get 20 replies...all different. So I'll start.

1) It will depend on the state.
2) It will depend on the law enforcement officer in any particular state

I wouldn't do it, just another reason to be bothered by someone in a uniform that could be bothering someone else that is committing an actual crime but found you to be just suspicious enough to check out.

WHY? As Scott said just giving LEO a reason to stop you. Put a sign in the window.

Around this area dealerships have a magnet plate holder.. they just slap the plate on the back of the vehicle during test drives.

Why do you need a "vehicle in tow" sign or plate? Does the toad have it's own licence plate? If it does, isn't that enough?

That magnetic plate mount was a great idea. My father used to have these spring things that clipped on the top and bottom edges of the bumpers. When they let loose, you needed a band aid.

Now the Ford dealers are using screws again...seems the aluminum bodied pickups don't do well with magnets.

I have never even seen a sign like this on a toad.

In Texas per my DPS Trooper buddy the license plate MUST be visible . If it's visible then it's a moot point traveling state to state, your legal.
I also have never seen a sign like that on any toad behind a MH. A junker behind a tow truck yes.

Unlike the North Point, on my Pinnacle the license plate is mounted dead center. I have a bicycle rack that goes into the hitch receiver. It doesn't completely cover up the license plate but makes it very hard to read.
