Long winded TV dilemna........

My Jayco Jayflight weighs roughly 5000 pds empty and they say no more than 7500 full...So In my bodyshop I have a 2003 wrecked ford expedition capable of towing 8900 pounds....now what they say vehicles can tow and what they actually can tow I know to be 2 different things!!!! For example My 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 conversion van I was told could tow 5500 and my other TT weighed 4000,needless to say I almost didnt make it back from Hersheypark last summer coming down rte 83.....
So what I would like to know before dropping the money into fixing this Expedition is.....Am I going to have issues towing my TT with this vehicle????? I have been renting Ford F-250s from enterprise at $50 a day when I want to go camping....My grand daughters like it so much I want to be able to go on a moments notice only expense gas and campground...not the added expense of Truck Rentals.....
When I look at potential TV low cost ones at $20,000 all have 100,000 miles on them allready and I really cant see puttin that kinda cake out for a truck thats lifespan is now very short!!!!!! Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.....Thanks!!!!

I have a Ford 150 with the 5.4 it pulls my 22FB, not as much power as I'd like, but it gets the job done. It is rated a 10K, I wouldn't use it like that.
The truck you are renting, how does it pull? What engine?
Your Dodge van v-8?
That 7500, is that actual or "estimated"?
The expedition is a half ton frame same as the van you now have. A 2004 Ford F250 has more frame, bigger brake, but the same engine as a 5.4 half ton unless it is a diesel or v10.
I don't really see what you would be gaining? Unless the van is a v6 or the rear gear is wrong for pulling?

1.what I would be gaining is the difference that the vans tow rate is 5500 vs the expedition with the 5.4 triton motor is 8900...
so that difference being 3400 pounds more towing capabilities
the truck I rent is an f 250 and i dont even feel a trailer behind me!!!!!
my dodge van has a 318 v8 and no tow package whatsoever
the 7500 is the GVRW of the travel trailer that I own
Your trailer is a 22 mine is a 26 I will guarantee there is some difference in weight there!!!!!
When I towed with my van it took everything it had to pull that camper up a highway hill, sometimes I even had to switch to a lower gear and at times I could see the coolant temps rise,so I am basically asking if anyone has factual information that the expedition will handle this job of towing my camper.......

I have no opinion on the Expedition so I won't comment on it's capability.

On the other hand I will comment on renting a tv. If I could rent a F250 for $50/day I wouldn't own a TV, it makes so much more financial sense to keep renting. How many nights are you camping? If it was 70, and I think that is a lot, you would probably need to rent that f250 for 100 days, or $5000. You never have to maintain it, deal with breakdowns, tires or anything that comes with vehicle ownership, you simply fuel up and drive. On the other hand when you own all those expenses plus more are yours, not to mention the acquisition cost. And finally towing with a 3/4 ton pickup will out perform a 1/2 ton SUV everyday.

Just an FYI - We had the same issue with with a Ford conversion van. When I looked into it further, the tow rating on the van was for the "base" model, i.e. without whatever was added to make it into a conversion van. In our particular case, we had one of the high top conversion vans, which added significant weight to the van, thus reducing the tow capacity. It was a very expensive lesson to learn as we blew out the tranny towing from NJ to Ocean City, MD and back again...oh well, live and learn.

Your spot-on that published Tow Ratings do not represent the "actual" tow rating (http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...uot-Tow-Rating).

Since you already have the TT, I would have it towed to a CAT scale (loaded for camping) and get the "actual" loaded weight. We all have different loading habits so knowing "your" actual loaded weight may help in the discussion/reply process in lieu of using a 5,000lb UVW to 7,500lb GVWR TT weight range.

Once you know the TT's loaded weight, figure 13% of the loaded weight for the TT's recommended loaded tongue weight. The loaded TT's tongue weight then must be subtracted from the TV's payload capacity..., and most 1/2 ton's aren't very generous with their specified payload capacity. Depending on your loaded weights, this may not even be an issue. Do you happen to know the TV's payload capacity?

I only bring up the importance of one's loading/towing habits because if your TT weighs in approaching it's GVWR, IMO you may not be pleased with the Expedition towing your TT in the hills (based on your comment about your prior TV/TT combination).

Depending on the motor in the Expy it should tow just fine... it is one of the larger SUV's ford makes...

Do you know what rear end is in the Exp?

Did you ever look at regearing the rear of your van, put in a heavy duty trans cooler?

I think you missed my point.
A Ford Expedition is based on the F150 chassis, the same as my F150. BUT my F150 has the tow package, correct rear gear, etc.

I don't have any doubts that your 26' trailer weighs more than my 22'. I would not have any larger trailer than I have and keep my F150. My 22 grosses at 4750 half of the "rated" 10K towing capacity.

A conversion van is doing good going down the road full of people, that is what is was built for, a comfortable ride. Your van does not have the proper rear gear for towing, the Expedition may not have the correct gear either.
You will need to research the VIN and find the options it was built with, just because it has a hitch, like some minivans, doesn't mean you should be putting a trailer behind it.

You need a bigger truck. Or a smaller camper.

The Ex will tow your camper just fine. My 06 v8 Mountaineer tows my 6000lb tt like a champ and it has the 4.6. It maxes out at 7100 lbs. Just make sure you have the factory tow package, hang those body panels straight, shoot it and and enjoy your new to you tv.

Just curious, is the 6,000lbs the TT's actual loaded weight, or it's GVWR?

Gvwr is 6200. Like most people, I am estimating it's actual weight. From the factory, with nothing in it, it weighs in at 4200. That's no battery or propane. With all the junk we bring with us, (firewood, bikes, bedding, toiletries, games, tables, chairs, razor scooters, tools, grill, food, water, clothes, tv,s) I'm quite sure I'm scraping the ceiling of the gvwr. Why do you ask?

I recalled that the 19BH had a GVWR around 6,000lbs, so when you stated that your TV tows your 6,000lb TT like a champ, I was curious if this was an actual CAT scale "loaded weight" or the TT's GVWR. My thought was that the clarification would be helpful to the OP in the event he takes his TT to a CAT scale for a loaded weigh-in.

We need to know what the Expedition is equipped with to give sound advice- What does the door sticker tell you? Is it a diesel or gas?- My 95 F-350 had 287k on the odometer when she was "retired" from fulltiming, but she was a 7.3 diesel- JMHO- DD

In his follow-up post the OP did say the Expedition had the 5.4L, so that would be a gasser.

All Expy's of that vintage are equiped with a 3.73 rear with a four speed auto o/d trans. Mine has the 5.4L which gives you the 8950lb towing capacity. Interestingly enough, the trailer towing package only includes a factory wired 7 pin connector. The trans coolers, radiators, rear-end, alternator and everything else is already there. Even the hitch is already installed regardless of trim level. the only thing possibly missing is a 7-pin and brake controller. Even if it's not there, the blue wire for brake power is already run along the frame rails, it's hidden in a wire loom and needs to be connected at both ends.

I tow a 27BHS (26BH is the current designation) with mine and it does it just fine. Enough power to get the job job done and enough curb weight to keep the TV in front of the TT. Gas mileage will be a little low, about 9 mpg. The only gripe I have is with the IRS on the Expy, it can be a little squishy. Best of luck to you. Good combination.
