Loose Receiver

Do any of you use a devise to tighten your ball mount into your receiver?

I am feeling if I could remove the movement between the shank and the receiver that I would have a slightly better ride and decrease the amount of wear on the shank & receiver?

Thanks, I would appreciated your thoughts!

Happy Camping & safe travels!!

The nut on your ball shank is loose? (no pun intended)
drive your vehicle with the ball mount down to your local U-haul or tool rental center. Ask them if they wouldn't mind torquing down that nut for you. Check the specs, but it is probably 450ft/lbs. No one has a cresent wrench that big.

The ball is perfectly tight! the hitch insert into the receiver on the vehicle is pretty sloppy!

Here's what Grumpy is referring to. There are several different variations available. https://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Anti-...CABEgLsOfD_BwE

I have one like this to keep my hitch rack stable when we travel with it.

https://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Anti-...ophy/RSCP.html

Just have to tighten it down and it pinches the connection tight.

I drilled and tapped both sides the receiver sleeve about an 1 1/2” or so before the receiver pin hole and use a 1/2” bolt on each side to tighten up against the receiver insert. Works great. Didn’t cost a dime, had the materials on hand.

I’m amazed at this simple thing. Hitch is rock solid now, no more clunking around. Makes it a bit more tedious than pulling a pin to get the hitch out but worth it.

Is it like throwing a hotdog down a hallway? (LOL) - But seriously, what size receiver and hitch are you using? My truck has a 3" receiver an my hitch needs a sleeve to take up the slack.

Umm, yes, lots of people do. I have large channel locks that will handle this size also.

He’s apparently not been in my toolbox lately.

Where did you get this Screwby? I have the same problem, using a 2" shank in a 2-1/2 inch receiver with an adapter that has lots of play.

Nevermind, looks like it's the hitch silencer posted earlier by Grumpy. So this thing works good with an 2-1/2" to 2" adapter?

Will these silencers work on the adapters you use to go from a 2-1/2 hitch to 2"?

Mine really shouldn’t have worked but it hits the gusset welded to my hitch. If it was a normal square hitch the angled part that’s supposed to hit would be too short. If that were the case I’d have welded a piece of flat steel or two to the hitch to make the difference. It’s rock solid, just did a 6 hour round trip with it and it’s the best $12 I’ve spent in a long long time

I'm thinking about having my neighbor weld my adapter to the truck hitch, I would think that would work?

100% would work. It just needs a piece of steel to take up the gap between the hitch silencer plate and the square hitch tube. I can’t even relay how much better it pulls. I had no idea that annoying clunking and rattling was letting the camper buck and jiggle so much. Much better “seat of the pants” experience.
