I go with the recommended tire pressure that the tire manufacturer has stamped on the tire's sidewall. Doing this for many years and has served me well.

Note: the recommended tire pressure is usually for a "cold" tire (one that has had time to cool down after use). The tire pressure generally will increase when the tire warms up from use.

If you use the pressure stamped on the sidewall of tire this is the max pressure and if you are not loaded you will wear out the center of your tires, thats why you use the manufacturers load chart according to your weight

My trailers are usually loaded pretty heavily.
You are correct, if you are lightly loaded most of the time and run a high tire pressure, you run the risk of premature wear on the center of the tire's tread pattern.
Under inflation can cause premature wear on the tire's edges and potential over heating of the tire.
This holds true for pretty much anything with pneumatic tires.
