New hitch- Installation UPDATE

I broke down and ordered a Curt Class V hitch from etrailer. I do not like the looks of my stock GM hitch, which is showing more signs of "pinboxflex" where the receiver actually bends upward thus reducing the effectiveness of your WD system. Hauling A full load of water on my last trip seems to have been the final test, even though it was a short distance it is bending more. The hitch is also very rusty. I`m afraid something could also break eventually. The hitch has been used quite a bit for 7 years now. I will update the thread after install and give my comparison of the two hitches. 181.00 with free shipping. Cheap insurance, IMO.

Did you have a GM hitch?

Last year I replaced mine with a class V 2 1/2" hitch better to have too much hitch than too little.

Lee,

After removing the old OEM receiver, place it next to the Curt on the floor and all your questions/concerns will be answered

Bob, I just hope my bolts are not frozen from salt water which is really nasty stuff, not a factor in Michigan I suppose. I do have an air impact wrench that should do the trick.

Several hours before trying the bolts, spray them well with Liquid Wrench. It's the best penetrating oil I've found for loosening up rusty bolts.

First day off in 2 weeks, I said I was not going to do any work. But that hitch was sitting there in my garage looking at me, soooooo I installed the new hitch today. It is much heavier and beefier then the OEM GM hitch, which was very rusty as shown in the pics and the receiver was bent upwards. No doubt it was time for a change. Past time actually. The Curt is about 1 1/4 inches higher so I will have to lower my hitch shank a hole to compensate.

The ravages of time and salt water. But I believe even when new these hitches were marginal for heavy tongue weights.

Lee,

I may have missed your follow-up in another thread, but how is the new receiver working out?

Bob

It worked great, I believe I am getting better weight distribution now and the truck handles better, about as good as a half ton will under the circumstances. I also feel much better about the hitch safety wise then that old GM rustoleum.

One other tidbit of info. The Curt hitch weighs 54 lbs and the stock GM hitch weighs 33 lbs.
There`s the beef!

Since there have been some recent questions about the GM hitches, time to resurface this thread so they can compare OEM to aftermarket.

That new hitch even looks safer. Good move.

I replaced the OEM receiver hitch on my 2002 K2500 Suburban with a Putnam XDR Class V model #25162 in 2004. Cost $150. I installed it myself.

Unfortunately, Putnam is no longer in business.

The Putnam is much heavier than the OEM. I feel it was a good modification to my tow vehicle.

Here are some side by side pictures of the OEM and Putnam:
