New Hitch Required ?

We just traded our 195 RB in for a 2119 Jay Flight 21QB. The WD hitch we have is a Fastway E2 Turnnion rated at 6000 LBS and 600 TW. The Dry TW on the new trailer is 530 Lbs and the Dry weight on the trailer is 4455 lbs. I think we are OK on the total weight but the tongue weight is close. When we add 2- 30 lb. propane tanks plus cargo in the trailer and the back of the truck we will likely exceed the 600 lb tongue weight.
If it were you would you purchase a new hitch or do you think we would be OK? We usually camp within a 200 mile radius maximum and most of or trips are less than 100 miles away. We only had the 195RB for one season and it was our first TT so we are still fairly new to the travel trailer world.

Thanks in advance.

Try it first and then decide. You can waist money on RV's like there's no end. Mine are slightly over rated and makes the spring bars a bit stiffer. The spring bars won't break at its rating of 600 lbs. maybe double at that. You can also buy used on the WEB if you decided.

As ALJO said, you can give it a try. One concern is your anti-sway may not be enough with an E2 and towing with a F150.

I also think your tongue weight will be close to 800lbs (gross trailer 6500lbs * .13 = 845lbs).

I'd suggest you air up your tires (TT and TV) to the maximum shown on the sidewalls and start shopping for a new hitch.

Have you called Fastway? Maybe you'll get lucky and get by with replacing the Trunnion arms if they'll fit your hitch.

IMO you will need higher rated spring bars, and/or a higher rated WDH for the 21QB. I agree with your assumption that you will exceed a 600lb loaded tongue weight.

The 2019 21QB has a 6,500lb GVWR and a "published" (web site, brochure, etc.) UVW of 4,455lbs. If you refer to the 'yellow sticker' on the side of a 21QB many "as shipped" UVW's are approaching 5,000lbs (includes LP tanks filled).

Since we all have different loading requirements/habits, our ready-to-camp TT gross weights and tongue weights will very. Some folks frequently tow with full fresh water tanks, load for family of four, ...., etc..

Hypothetical conservative - moderate loaded 21QB: (5,000lb UVW) + (500lbs cargo, no fluids) + (50lbs dealer battery, etc.) = 5,550lbs gross weight

Loaded tongue weight @ 5,550lbs: 721lbs - 832lbs range (13% - 15% ...... recommended & common scaled range)

Worst case scenario @ GVWR 6,500lbs: 845lbs - 975lbs (13% - 15%)

Once you have your TV/TT combination under "typical" ready-to-camp loaded conditions (full fuel, passengers, cargo, etc.), a CAT scale visit would be a great way to confirm all your weights, WDH adjustment, etc., based on your typical towing conditions. You wouldn't have to re-visit a CAT scale unless loading habits changed dramatically.

If it were me, I would ditch that hitch and get a new one. Husky,Blue Ox and Equalizer are all good choices.

I have had many customers that complain about e2 hitches and sway. I had one in here last week that was broken at the trunion. I am not a fan as you can tell.

X2... I wouldn't skimp on a WDH to save a few bucks. Safety and peace of mind while towing is priceless.

Thanks !

Thanks for all the great feedback on my Hitch issue. The one I own is a Fastway E2 rated at 6000 lbs. and 600 lbs. tongue. After some advice from this group I did find that they make replacement Trunnion bars for my Hitch that could take it up to 800 lb. or 1000 lb. tongue ratings. The issue I have so far is I am in Canada and the only place I have found that sells the replacement bars is - “etrailer.com” and they are located in the U.S. They want over $80 U.S. shipping plus I will have to pay some duty and taxes to get them across the boarder. Converting the price of the bars, shipping and my estimate at duty and taxes and exchange rates, I will end up paying over $400 CDN. $ for the bars. If I am not able to find a CDN. supplier I will likely order from “eTrailer.com” as a new hitch option will be in the $750 CDN$ minimum.

Thanks again for the Feedback, you did convince me that I need to upgrade my hitch in order to safely tow the Jay Flight 21QB.
