New SUV
Hey All,
I'm looking to purchase a newer SUV to pull my 28DSBH. Loaded up, we average around 6,700 lbs. An SUV fits our family better, so we're looking at the Yukon XL. My question for you mechanically gifted peeps is which model to choose.
-The SLT has a 5.3 liter V-8. Torque @ RPM = 383@4,100. HP@RPM = 355@5,600. Rear axle 3.08 Ratio. Max Trailering = 8,300.
-The Denali has a 6.2 liter engine. Torque = 460. HP = 420. Rear axle 3.23. Max Trailering = 8,100.
Is it really necessary to spend the extra money for a Denali because of the bigger engine?

With that load, your family, and anything you put in the truck, you'll appreciate the extra power especially if you plan on towing through mountains.
What you really have to watch is your payload. That's more important than the power output of the engine. It's on a sticker in the driver side door. SUVs typically have a lower payload than their full size PU counterparts. They also have softer suspensions and in the case of the Suburban/Yukon XL, use coil springs instead of leaf springs for a cushier ride.
So if you expect to tow 6700# loaded, your tongue weight may be 870# (13%). If you payload is 1400# (and I'm guessing), that leaves only 530# for your family, your dog, and the "stuff" you carry in the SUV. It runs out real fast.

I have no experience with the TV's you mention but can give you my data as a point of reference.
We towed an X23B weighing 4420# with 600# on the hitch (without WDH hooked up).
Our Rear GAWR was 4128#, without WDH our rear axle was 4040#, with WDH it was 3800#.
Our Max Tow was 8950#.
Towing 6700# would put your tongue weight around 870# (13%) add 75-100# for the hitch and you are creeping close to 1K#.
Look for a way to get a line on the weights and GAWR's for the vehicles you are considering to verify they will be a suitable TV. IMHO the "Max trailer weight" is a pretty useless number.
My point is you will be well below the max trailer weight but could find yourself at or above the Rear GAWR.
The CAT Scale is your friend.

Both the 3.08 & 3.23 rear axles would be fine for a vehicle highway gear..., but would fall short once you start towing with them, even with the newer 6 or 8 speed transmissions. IMO you may want to consider at least a 3.55 rear axle ratio (3.73 max) since the vehicle will be used for towing.

I looked-up the trailering and payload specs for the 2016 Yukon XL:
5.3 2WD, Payload 1764lb, Towing 6500lb
5.3 4WD, Payload 1725lb, Towing 6300lb
Now, if you order it with the "Max Trailering" package, the payload stays the same but towing rating increases 8300lb and 8000lb, respectively. I have a 2015 Sierra crewcab with the same engine, payload is not much more ~1750lb and towing is 9400lb (3.42 axle).
If you go with the Yukon XL, you absolutely need the max trailering package, you'll get the 3.42 rear axle ratio, integrated brake controller, increased-capacity suspension with rear air level control and 2-speed AutoTrac transfer case on 4WD models. I am not a fan of the transfer case, but everything else is a must.
I would not step up to the Denali just for the 6.2, your payload will drop significantly to 1490lb and your pocketbook will hurt even worse. I have pulled my 7500lb trailer up 12% grade with the same engine and axle, RPMs were steady between 3-4k. The 6.2 is a beast, but it NEEDS premium and is not the volume engine.
