New tow truck??

I am in the market for a new tow truck, I currently have a Sierra 2500HD diesel.
We have a 2018 Jayflite 28bhbe with Elite pkg. I am not going back diesel due to heavy maintenance costs and the Def systems, always freezes every winter, from northern Ontario.
Trucks i am looking at are either Gm 2500hd again but 6.0 gasser, F250 gasser or Nissan Titan XD gas, what are thoughts really looking for reviews on titan xd for towing this large trailer, real word day to day mpg etc

I’ve been really happy with my F-250 so far but can’t give you any feedback on towing the 28BHBE yet...I’ve only towed it from the dealer to our storage lot which is about 15 miles. The F-250 towed our old 26BH to Colorado fine but I kind of wished I had the 4.xx gears. My towing mpg was 8-9.

Of your choices, I think the best options are with the Titan and Ford for the 360 view camera system. Go drive them and see which one tickets your fancy the most!

We’ve been very happy with our F250 gasser. It towed our previous White Hawk 27DSRL TT very nicely and now does an exceptional job with our current 28.5 HT FW. Truck rides good and is quiet on the inside. We get 14-15 mpg not towing and 8-9 towing.

I have towed my trailer with a 2003 Chevy 2500 non had 6.0 when my current diesel was in for repairs, it did fine just lots have changed with new ones.
I know all gasses will be thirsty towing I am ok with that, can not justify $15000 more for diesel to have def issues again.
So the feed back on day to day driving is appreciated

I would stay away from the XD for the reason that it's likely just as expensive as the 3/4 tons but still a 1/2 ton truck, that is to say 1/2 ton rated brakes, suspension, frame, etc. The 5.6L gas is also extremely thirsty for what it produces. The 28BHBE is 3/4 ton territory. Whichever gasser you get, make sure it has towing gears in the diffs. 4.10 or 4.30 if available.

+1 to making sure you get the right rear end. Also, I agree you'll likely be happier towing that trailer with a true 3/4T, but there are some 1/2T class trucks that can handle it fine depending on your usage pattern.

I towed my BHBE with a Ram 6.4 Hemi, and it did fine. It would have been better with the 4.10 rear end instead of the 3.73. It was sometimes difficult to get the transmission in the right place towing that load.

Other than that, I LOVED that truck. It did EVERYTHING I needed it to do and then some, and I didn't worry about weight at all.

FWIW, my dad has an older Chevy 3/4T with the 6.0, and it is a SOLID and well proven platform. I wouldn't hesitate to get a new one even for a second. With advancements in transmission programming and technology, they're getting better every year. I'm a little partial to Ram for trucks, but I would get a GM if it fit right for sure.

My 2015 F-250 (3:73 gear rear end) pulls my 27BHS very well and zero complaints towing TT = 6,085 lbs dry with at least another 1,000 lbs of ‘stuff’.
I also use it as my daily driver. My wife doesn’t care for the bouncy ride but other than the poor gas mileage compared to 1/2 tons it does great! My preference is an 8’ bed and those are really hard to find, especially in a 1/2 ton.
I’m with you on the diesel, too much maintenance to justify the extra cost!

I do know the 3.73 rear end in any truck will be fine my current D-max has 3.73.
But after reading here and truck forums I stopped at Nissan dealer today, results are.
Good looking truck, nice interior tow ratings close to my needs. Now the bad. So they have 2 trucks on lots one a pro4 x with cummins and other gas pro 4x with luxury pkg. so cummins has a payload of 1695 with options it has. I would be over that in no time. But I want gas this time, sticker on door shows payload of 1925. Both trucks way lower then advertised numbers,
I have 1050# tongue weight, me wife kids etc are 500 now and going up they are young. So would not take much to pass payload on gas titan also.
What kind of true sticker payload on gas f250 crew or Chevy , my dads old plot Chevy with 6.0 non he does not list anything

Titan MPG

I was recently thinking of trading in my F-250 for a F-150 or Titan or Tundra. Unfortunately my research showed that the Nissan Titan got bad gas mileage for a 1/2 ton so I stayed away. Payload was an issue on all 3 makes and trying to find something with an 8’ bed (with a backseat) was next to impossible so I ended up keeping my F-250

My dad's gas GM 2500 with the 6.0 has a GVWR of 9,000 leaving him with available payload just over ~2,000. My ram had 10K GVWR and that left me with ~3,300 lbs payload. And that was real-world since I didn't add hardly any weight to that truck.

Sorry, I don't know what the current numbers are on GM 3/4T trucks, but I am confident they're AT LEAST as much as what my dad's truck has (north of 2,000 lbs).

I will say this for the empty ride; they ride A LOT nicer with some weight in the back!

Stopped by Ford, they had nogas F250 on lot, salesman was trying to push f150 with max tow/had pkg claiming it has over 2600# payload , yes every day driver that truck would be perfect. I have 2 friends with similar but 5.0 and both say the same the trailer drives the truck white knuckle ride.
Was the Titan worst mpg over your f250?

My 2018 F250 with the 6.2 has a payload sticker of 3287 lbs. Diesel will be much less unless you go with a 350

I'm getting about 10 ~ 11 mpg towing my 8,800 lb TT with my 2012 6.2L, 3.73 F-250 on most flat ground here on Long Island. I'm sure that number goes dramatically down hill as the driving becomes more and more uphill.

rumor is ford is going to come out with a 7L for gassers in 2020... I don't know if it is true or not...

a good 6L or the ford 6.2L gas are both good get the 4.10's your mileage will be less but your pulling will be better...

Titan was not worse MPG than my F-250, I was just expecting more for 1/2 ton.
I believe they pretty much all showed 13-17 (or 15-17) MPG which was not enough of an improvement to justify changing vehicles. I should note I was looking at used Titans around 2015-2017 models with low mileage.

I have used the Titan to pull a 34RSBS TT which is quite a bit more trailer than yours. It pulled it with ease. It was the titan with the diesel so I cant say how the gaser would pull it. I am sure power wouldn't an issue

I sure gas Titan has the power my only concern there would be max payload. I average 30,000km ( 18500mikes ) a year, out of that I tow roughly 3000km a year if we do no long road trips. Road trips are once every 3 yrs and those are about 4000km per trip. So I want better daily driver but to hear gas 250/2500 are this low scares me, here in Ontario I would be close to $10,000 a year in fuel costs

Yes, the Titan gas consumption is pretty horrible. Mine seems to be getting about 11 mpg in mostly city driving. This is the regular Titan, not the XD with the 5.6l gas engine. The rating for the Endurance engine is the same in both lines, but the XD is heavier than the standard 1/2 ton and has a much heavier frame and components brought over the from the Nissan commercial truck line, so I would expect a drop in mileage.

Note the conversion is a bit tricky for me - I am also in Ontario, and the truck rarely dropped below 20l/100km which is the top of the scale on the econ display. So I switched to km/l and seem to regularly be around 4.5l/km. That, according to Google translates to under 11mpg. That translates to ouch at the gas pumps, even with gas floating around $1/l right now (~$4/gal).

However, I had marked the Titan off my list early when test driving new trucks (mostly for electronics, but also for gas mileage). Unfortunately test driving ALL of the competition left me feeling "meh", so I broke down and test drove a Titan. Man what a truck! Still in love, and like most old fart's lovers, she's killing my pocket book but keeping a smile on my face.

Can't help with towing mileage yet; bought this after the TT was put to bed for the winter, but let's say I'm already prepping myself for the bad news come May.

If bad gas mileage is a concern as a daily driver you do not want a gasser 250/2500. I've had both a Chevy and a Ford and they are thirsty, no getting around it.
