New Tow Vehicle?
We have a Jayflight 23MBH, max weight of 7250 lbs, but we usualy tow at about 6100 lbs, but rarely with tanks full at 6700 lbs.
Currently tow with a 2002 Chevy Tahoe, payload is the limit I am closet to, by my calculations I can only carry about 350 lbs of cargo, after passengers (kids 7 years & 5 years). It tows pretty good, but could use more power in the hills.
We went with our current trailer because it is fairly short and the Tahoe is fairly short, since we like camp in smaller campgrounds. So upgrading to a larger trailer is unlikely.
I am thinking about getting a new F150 super crew with 5.5' bed, this is almost 3 feet longer than the Tahoe, and it will be a city daily driver so smaller and better MPG the better.
I have done all the calculations on the F150 and it would be way under for almost all the towing numbers. I did all these calculations anticipating the future, bigger kids, more stuff, and maxed our trailer. My new numbers are still limited by payload, but I could carry about 650 lbs of cargo in the truck. Normal camping cargo is just bikes and firewood, so maybe 300 lbs.
I have heard a lot of people say go bigger up to the Super Duty. So keeping in mind with my max numbers I would still have about 350 lbs of extra cargo room (small boat or ATV anyone?), we want to fit in small spots, and city daily driver, maybe 10 - 20 trips a year, and not many long haul trips. My feeling is that usually we will be way under the numbers, but if we max out the trailer, we are still under the numbers, but will it be safe and comfortable to tow?
Just looking for opinions on this setup and F150 or F250?

Just keep in mind most of us trade up to a larger TT or 5th wheel in the future. I would consider a larger truck leaving the option open in the future for a larger TT or 5th wheel.

X2. We made the mistake of not going with a big enough truck to start with and ended up trading up after two years.

I made the mistake twice. Third time I finally bought a truck that had a towing/payload capacity double of what I needed. It allowed me to get my current TT.

I agree with going bigger than I need, and I still might go to the F-250 after I test drive it. Keep in mind, that we are kind of minimalist people. we looked at a lot of trailers, and our second choice was a 19', we like to be able to get into smaller spots.

IF you plan on keeping the current trailer for some time, what about the F150 with the HD Payload package? Only downside to it is it is very hard to find unless a special order, and price wise is about the same as a similarly optioned F250.....
Also, firewood is very heavy depending on just how much you take. At times I load ours in a Rubbermaid tote, about 42x18x18 or so. One time weighed both of the totes, about 150lbs each for that little bit of firewood!!! Plus depending on the bikes they can weigh upward of 30lbs +/- each.... Our boys 20" full suspension Toy R Us bikes are about 35lbs each, about 5lbs HEAVIER than my wife's and my full suspension Specialized mtb's.
Otherwise it may be a smart move to go with a 250/2500 now, or even a 350/3500 due to almost the same price.... Especially if an atv may be in the future....

Here's another vote for getting more truck than you need. Or even more truck than you think you MIGHT need. I bought too much trailer for my truck the first time, then upgraded the truck later. Now I have more payload and towing capacity than I'll ever need, and it feels A LOT better to have that margin when I'm pulling tin down the road.

So it seems to come down to this, (price is very similar with the 6.2 gas Engine), F250 is about 15" longer, and worse MPG. Anyone with the 6.2L have any MPG numbers?
