Yeah, thinking a new receiver hitch is in my future. But having just put a new B&W Companion fifth wheel hitch in, it may have to wait a while.

BTW, the trailer ball also has a weight rating.

Ditto the weight reduction issue. I bought this from Walmart and noticed that it was not certified for WDH usage. I was not close on weight but went ahead and bought the larger shank in case I wanted to haul more later

I do recall running across a statement (Owners Manual, Towing Chart, etc.) made by one of the Big-Three that when the OEM 2" insert adapter was utilized the 2 1/2" OEM receiver essentially was de-rated to that of a 2" OEM receiver.

The reducer does not reduce your capabilities here is what I found “
A hitch reducer sleeve such as Reese Titan Reducer Sleeve # 58102, which fits into a 2-1/2-inch hitch to reduce it's receiver opening to a 2-inch size, is the only type of adapter that does NOT cause a loss of hitch capacity because it does not alter the distance/geometry of the hitch tube.
My tow ball is rated 30,000 pounds, my hitch 18,000 pounds with allowable tounge weight of 12,000. I have been inspected by Arizona Department of Transpotation both at point of entry and on highway safety checks.

The de-rated example I referenced in my post was based on a specific Big-Three supplied OEM adapter sleeve utilized with their specific OEM receiver.

As Witt74 mentioned, if you need the 2 1/2 receiver for the weight capacity, a 2" shank/ball might not do it, remember it's the weakest part of the system needs to be rated for what your towing.
It your hitch, shank, receiver is rated for 30,000 and your ball is rated for 5,000 then you're limited to 5K regardless of the rest of your system. ie all 2" balls or shanks are not rated the same. make sure they are rated for or better than what you're towing.

Actually in my case the hitch ball is the highest rated component.
Ball 30,000 lbs
Shank solid two inch steel 18,000 lbs
Platform where ball mounts 12,000 lbs
I think we all agree the lowest rated component sets the weight limit.

My 2017 RAM 3500 came with an adapter. On the floor of the back seat there are two storage units hidden under the floor mats. You can find it in there together with some other things. My salesperson didn't even know it was there! I accidentally came across it.

Wow! Just checked Ford's version of the reducer. $61! I bought one at WalMart for $15! If you wanna spend it, here's the part number. I'd have a hard time telling my customers this price.
Reduces from 2 1/2" to 2" and is universal.

Good choice, I love my B&W Companion hitch. I opted for the turnover ball so I can remove the hitch without any rails to contend with.

Hi. I just had exactly the same problem, I bought a 2 1/2 to 2 inch adapter at WalMart for $12, then found a supplied adapter under the rear bench seat!

You should have received an adapter with the truck.

The receiver hitch on my Chevy 2500 is 2.5". My truck came with a sleeve to use to allow me to use the 2" components that I already have. You can pick one of these up at Walmart or an RV store.

Your only as strong as your weakest link. If the 2” portion of your assembly is rated for less than the rest of the components, your max would be the lower rating.
