New truck receiver bigger than 2" ???
Hello,
Apparently the Ram 2500 has a hitch receiver larger than 2".
Is there a "work around" like spacers or something to make up the difference between the hitch insert and receiver?
Or do I need to buy a new correct size insert?
Any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks

It should come with an adapter, at least a Chevy does.

I have a 2 1/2" receiver on my 2015 F350. You can get an adapter sleeve that will reduce to use the 2" hitch. You can find them on line, at Tractor Supply, or possibly at the home improvement stores, or any hitch dealers. Just remember, you are still limited to the weight limits of the 2" receiver.

I went from a 1500 to a 2500 and here's my thread:
https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...elp-57998.html
The height changed enough where I had to get a new receiver mount shank. I bought a 2.5" one but the truck came with an adapter. Adapters are common - check etrailer.com or amazon.com .
YMMV

Both my Ram 2500 & 3500 came with adapters from the factory with purchase. Otherwise you’ll need to go purchase one...or purchase a hitch with your size receiver.

If you decide to buy a 2 1/2" receiver look at the Convert a ball cushioned receivers they really make a difference in stop and go traffic . I have 3 of them with different drops depending on the TV, I won't tow without them.

When moving to a new Super Duty, I had to buy a new 2.5" drop shank to accommodate both the receiver and the height of the truck. My old shank was 2" and too short as this truck is much taller then the old Chevy.

Yep, if it's new it should come with a 2" sleeve adapter and will be under the rear seat.

I really do not think using the adapter will lower your towing capacity. Reasoning is the adapter is much like placing a slug in a roll bar cage when joining two tubes. Plus why would you be able to purchase 2 inch shank hitches rated above the 10,000 pound class IV rating. Just shooting from the hip so comments are welcome.

My chevy 2500 has a 2.5 hitch and came with the adapter.
Looks like the photo. when inserted, it slides all the way back until the end lip touches the 2" receiver and the pin holes match up.

Check the storage areas under your rear seats and floorboards. That is where mine was. However I bought a 2 1/2 shank for my WDH. Why limit yourself with an adapter?

Just saying don't overload your 2" shanks when you use the sleeve adapter. The 2 1/2 receivers are class V, depending on the brand, can handle up to 18,000 lbs GTW. Most class IV shanks are not rated for this amount of weight, as far as I know. Saw the adapter sleeve in my local Wal Mart today, so they may be available there in your location. BTW, the trailer ball also has a weight rating.

I read quite a few folks saying the sleeve causes issue like sheering pins. I had some excessive wear on mine and it added a lot of slop. I ultimately went to a larger shank and it has reduced the slop a lot.

Good to know. I have not heard about that issue.

Yeah a buddy of mine saw that my truck had the adapter in the receiver when I bought it. He said throw that thing away and get a 2.5" shank. I had to buy a new shank anyway so I went with 2.5. I also bought a new 2.5" drop hitch for my boats and utility trailer.

The reason I went with the sleeve was to avoid buying the 2 1/2" shank for now. I bought my truck used, and on closer inspection, found that the receiver hitch is about 2" off center. Looked under the truck, the hitch is bent where it attaches to the truck frame. Have not towed with it yet, will pull my empty 16 ft trailer to see what happens. Thinking I'm gonna have to replace the receiver hitch.

Having been down this road on my Ram 2500...my advice is bite the bullet and buy the 2.5” shank...less slop and movement.

Bent 2" off center? Yikes, get a new hitch ASAP. Etrailer has truck hitches reasonable.
