Tail wagging the dog.
Notice all the items on the rear rack which no doubt reduced tongue weight.

Yes it appears several factors were in play here.

Yikes!
Given how fast they passed that truck, it looks like they were traveling at a pretty high speed too.

Looked like a Superduty, so it wasn't too much trailer for the truck. It appears as though too little tongue weight and an uneducated tower... A light tap of the trailer brakes would have solved all that sway...

Oh yeah, probably fast enough to be really late getting where he was headed.
"Hey honey, what'd ya say we stay in a hotel tonight?"

Just rewatched. In the cargo tray, are two loose 20 pound propane tanks sliding back and forth. No sign of the breaks being activated.

Lord knows what else was on that back rack besides the twin propane tanks. The ass end probably lightened the tongue weight as spoon059 mentioned.

Hopefully, he can salvage another pair of underwear from the wreckage! He definitely needs 'em!

How much do you want to bet he was talking on his phone or texting?

Hitting the brakes (vehicle, not trailer) would probably not have helped at all.

Best solution: Apply trailer only brakes.
Next best: Speed up then gradually slow down.

So I am kind of confused after reading some of the youtube comments... Reading the manual and other sources state you should let off the gas pedal and apply the manual trailer break. But I see a lot of comments on the youtube video stating you should accelerate to "pull" the trailer straight and had this person letup on the gas it could have been a lot worse?

Am I missing something here? Is there a right or wrong way to recover from this situation?

Don't slow down or anything! Going way too fast. It almost looks like he accelerates rather slowing down and perhaps applying TT brakes. Didn't look like brakes were applied at all. He would have slowed down quite a bit just by taking foot off the gas.

Brake the trailer only until she straightens out. (manually)

The craziest thing is that he had PLENTY of time to take action to stop the sway. He should have immediately applied the manual trailer brakes. If that didn't stop it IMMEDIATELY, he should have continued to apply the trailer brakes and accelerated slightly (like pulling a bent string from both ends, it straightens out), then slow down and pull off the road safely. If none of that worked, then he would have had time to take measures to find something to grab 'hold of because he was going for a ride!

But he had PLENTY of time to do a lot of things that could have prevented this.

I actually made my wife watch that clip several times as a learning exercise.

Here's a thought though; what if he didn't have a brake controller in the truck?
