OK to lengthen the chains on the weight distribution bars?

Hello! Took delivery of a 2017 Jayco White Hawk 31BHBS last weekend. RV dealership moved the Pro Series weight distribution system from my previous RV and installed it on the new one. While I was in the dealership signing paperwork, the service department got my truck all hooked up so that it was ready to go when the paperwork was done and I took off.

Once I got home and tried to unhitch, it was incredibly difficult to remove the weight distribution bars...the chains are too short...even on the last link. I had to jack the tongue up so high in order to get them off that I ended up blowing a fuse on the power tongue jack (at least I hope thats all I did...haven't even gotten to that issue yet).

It looks like I could remove the chains from the bars and replace with longer ones....I only need a couple of extra links. Will this work or have I over-simplified my problem? I assume I could buy a chain of similar strength at the local hardware store....

Appreciate any input!

You may need your chains in that link when going down the road. That is how adjustments are made and IF you add more chain, it could be NOT adjusted correctly.

Maybe you should take trailer back and have dealer look at again before changing it.

Rico1971,

Welcome to JOF

Your dealer didn't install and/or adjust your WDH correctly (not surprised)...., no additional chain links should be required. It sounds like the ball mount "tilt" angle may need to be adjusted to allow for proper chain adjustment/weight distribution. I'm assuming that the model/rated WDH is compatible with your new TT.

Take your TV/TT combo back to the dealer for proper adjustment. Keep in mind that once your TV/TT combination is under normal "loaded" for camping conditions the WDH may require one final minor adjustment since the dealer adjustment is under "unloaded" conditions.

Reference your Pro Series installation instructions for proper adjustment procedure. If you don't have a copy visit the Pro Series web site with your WDH model number and you should be able to download a copy.

(As I posted in your other post...)

Congratulations on the new White Hawk and welcome to the forum.

Hopefully someone with the same hitch ('Pro Series'?) can comment.

I'd suggest you get the hitch installation instructions and check the entire hitch setup. It's possible the dealer did not setup it up correctly for your new trailer.

I agree with Rustic Eagle.

DO NOT add links to the chains.

When properly set up there will be no need for additional links.
