Payload Calculation

When calculating payload, do I include the weight of a full fuel tank? Do I add the weight of the gas to my calculation for CCC/payload? Is it included as payload, or is the weight of a full factory installed fuel tank already factored when the manufacturer posts the CCC on the door jam sticker?

Best way to get your available payload is to head to a scale with a full tank of gas. Your gross vehicle weight, minus the scale weight is your available payload. Anything you add onto or inside the vehicle(trunk/cabin/bed/accessories) counts against this number.

It’s even better to take the vehicle like you would be loaded for towing. Eg take the whole family, and dog to weigh if that’s how you plan to travel.

Note that nominal means filled to the amount specified for the tank - a 45 gallon tank will have 45 gallons of fuel to calculate curb weight.
Since payload = GVWR - Curb weight (with allowance for a standard driver), then yes, the fuel is in the calculation already.

you can just add about 6 lbs per gallon of gas that will help you figure it out without the trip...
You have to see if the manufacturer weights are dry or wet...and if they add any people to it...
you have to count things though like running boards, topper, hitch etc...

I have my scale calculations. I am trying to clarify if the door jam sticker gives a number that assumes a full tank already. So if my full tank is 240lbs, the payload listed is after the 240lbs. or does it not include the gas weight, and I must include the gas weight in my load calculation.

If its a recently produced vehicle the sticker includes full operating fluids and anything that it came with when it rolled of the line. Anything the dealer or you added is not included. Neither is the weight of a driver.

If you have the scale numbers then the only sticker number that matters is the gross vehicle weight. It’s simple subtraction to find out your available payload.

Yep, the ONLY way to figure payload is weigh your truck(as ready to go)then subract weight from GVWR. That's your payload, PERIOD. I was shocked by 1000lbs when I weighed my truck.

I fully understand and agree with the the CAT scale weighing to derive payload for "ready to go" load.

I am asking about the vehicle's "payload" capacity without a "load," just the vehicle as equipped from the factory (no trailer or load in the bed, or anything else). Do you include the weight of fuel in the fuel tank? Or does the door jam sticker CCC assume a full tank of gas or not?

Yes, it includes the a full tank of fuel.

The sticker doesn't say PLUS WEIGHT OF FUEL.

Was your truck full of fuel when weighed, if so should match yellow sticker

@Quantum, @Jopopsy
So I do not include the weight of a full tank of gas in the payload calculation. In other words, a full fuel tank and other fluids are already factored in the number given for available CCC.

Sticker says 1792, but my actual truck weight the time I weighed was 8560, sot despite what the sticker says, my payload that day was 1440.

Payload calculation is GVWR - actual truck weight, period. Doesn't matter if truck is full, half or empty. Payload rating can change everytime you drive, depending on what is in the truck. If you add airbags, (does NOT improve payload) the weight of the airbags is now part of the truck weight. Tonneau cover adds to the weight. People get to hung up on the 'yellow sticker' payload rating. GVWR is the only weight that matters.

Payload sticker, calcules already a full tank of fuel, and an average size driver of 150 pounds, stock truck as it rolls out of the factory.
