Question About Prodigy Brake Controller and Brakes

I just purchased a 2015 Jayco Jay Flight 32RLDS TT about a month ago and am towing with my 2007 Chevy 2500HD Crew Cab pickup. The trailer pulls well, but braking seems a little lacking. I have a Prodigy brake controller that I used for years with my Keystone Outback 29BHS, and it performed admirably.

I went by the standard procedure for adjusting the controller, like I have in the past - that is, use the sliding lever to apply the trailer brakes only. Adjust the gain up each time until the brakes lock up the wheels, then back it off about one number. I've done this successfully with my previous TT and would adjust whenever my load was different, from trip to trip. (Usually heavier on a weekend trip with firewood and full fresh tanks, as opposed to no firewood and only about 20 gallons in the fresh tank on a long haul - and I'm planning a 2500 mile RT for vacation, in June.)

My problem is this - I have the gain turned all the way up, and the brakes will not lock up the wheels - even on a gravel surface. I called the dealer today and talked to the technician and he pointed out that this trailer is as heavy, empty, as my Outback weighed fully loaded. Also, he said the brakes are new and to let them wear in and seat, and after a number of trips it should improve. But he didn't think the wheels would lock up, because of the trailer's weight.

At 10 mph, on level ground, the trailer brakes alone WILL stop both vehicles in about 25 - 30 feet, but I guess I'm just used to them locking up as part of the adjustment procedure.

So, for you folks with experience with this weight of trailer - is this normal? My trailer dry weight is about 7400#, and max loaded weight is 10,250#.

Thanks for any input!

I couldn't get mine to lock up in the beginning either, but lately they have been much more effective. I will need to adjust my gain down some next time I'm out. There might be something to this "let them seat" advice.

I'm curious what others say about this.

If your rig was towed to your dealer from the factory I can assure you the brakes are "burnished" in nicely already.

It's only 250 miles from the factory, in Middlebury, IN to my dealership, in Peoria. Probably towed there by a 1-ton truck that didn't worry about adjusting the brakes. So I will see how it handles and brakes after a few trips behind my truck. But I want to get this resolved before I take my 2500 mile round trip to the east coast and back.
