RAM 2500:how great/needed is the trailer surround view camera system?
I'm looking at getting an in-stock Ram 2500. Unfortunately there are not too many in stock where I am. I found one that looks good, but it does not have the tech package, which means it doesn't have the trailer surround view camera system. How important is this camera system, especially for a very newbie tower?

It may be a nice feature to have, but not an absolute necessity IMHO. A good pair of trailering mirrors on the truck, either stock or aftermarket are critical so you can see at least 200' behind you when towing, and a spotter to watch when packing up is a good idea. Otherwise, if you're solo, G.O.A.L. (Get Out And Look), like pro-truckers do.
Even though there's a back-up camera on out F150, I still use the mirrors, and my take a look on the screen for a second, but I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there.

I'd concur. An I have a Ram 2500 and those mirrors open up for a great view to the rear.

Every experienced "tower" was once a newbie tower. Mirrors appropriately sized to view the side length of the trailer along with spot mirrors for cab side view work just fine, no distracting "tech package" needed. I towed with a Dodge 2500 and the mirrors were fully adequate on both side and spot.
Other than driving, as already mentioned; use a spotter and look around, including up.

You can add your own surround-view system to the trailer. This will give you a clear view of the trailer's sides and in back of the trailer. See Haloview.

I just purchased this past week a long box crew cab 3500 with the surround view system. I have not towed with it yet. I like it for parking lots. I have noticed the stripes in the rear view mirror are way off, they show me I am in my neighboring parking stalls when I am not.
In reality I wanted it, for parking in my garage, as it will be a tight fit

Just a distraction for me. I am used to using mirrors and G.O.A.L..
All that beeping and alarming is also distracting!

Cameras are nice still think it's better to do the good old look around as well!

I like the rear and side cameras for parking and having rear view when towing.
But they are certainly not a necessity, I depend way more on the truck mirrors which work really well.

I don't even know what the trailer surround cameras are. I've got a backup camera on my 2015 Ram 2500 and tow mirrors. I can see everything that I need to see when I'm motoring down the road.

MY Ram 3500 came without the Tech Package but I found I didn't need it since I already had the WIFE package. Cheaper too.

Not a RAM, but we bought a 2017 F350 KR DRW last summer, has all those cameras.
NEVER use them.

Cameras
Although I own a Chevy I went from a Ram 1500 short bed to a 2500 HD long bed. The driving experience was totally different having a larger and longer vehicle. I use the cameras all the time while parking and fitting into tight spaces. Sure you can maneuver without them but they are truly a benefit. I would try to test drive both
