RAM EcoDiesel Purchase
If you own, have owned, or researched owning a RAM EcoDiesel, what are your thoughts about the truck as both a TV and a daily driver? Does the EcoDiesel get better towing MPG over as gasser? We currently get about 10-12 towing MPG with the 5.7 Hemi. To consider our towing set up, please see this thread; I put the CAT numbers in for our Jay Feather 23RBM. We hope to keep the Feather for the duration of our use of this new truck.

The payload you listed for the EC, is that for the actual truck you’re purchasing or just off the brochure numbers? Depending on how the truck is optioned, you may be nowhere near that payload.

It's on the specs with the truck's options, but I have not checked the door jam (max occupancy and cargo weight) sticker yet. I am definitely going to.

Oil changes are very expensive for that diesel. I was at my oil change place the other day and they had a big banner touting a synthetic oil made from natural gas. I asked the guy what is that all about, sounds expensive. He said its the spec oil for the Ram EcoDiesel and its $200 for an oil change good for 6000 miles. He said the oil filter alone is over $60, Ram has a patent on it so no aftermarket so far.

No, oil changes don't cost $200 on the Ecodiesel. No, there isn't a "patent" on the oil filter and it doesn't cost $60. From Amazon I can get the Mopar filter for $32 and a Wix filter for $22. I'm sure if I looked longer or harder I could find an even better deal. 10.5 quarts of oil is a little less than 3 gallons. A gallon of Rotella T-6 is $22 every day, and can be bought on sale for $15 usually.
Simple math is $45 for oil and $22 for a filter. $67 total.
I can't figure out whether you are trying to get a laugh or whether you actually believe yourself!

My only knowledge of this is from the owner of a Pennzoil Oil change place. I asked about the banner for synthetic oil made from natural gas and that was what he said, not looking for a laugh just repeating what I was told. I have no reason to believe he would lie about the $200 cost.

Well, toilet paper costs $7000 now too... https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/...per/618657002/
Since I've seen that outrageous price one time, that means that all toilet paper costs $7000 and it is patent protected and trademarked.
If your only knowledge is that limited about the subject, perhaps you shouldn't reply to a thread wherein the OP is asking for opinions from those that OWN, OWNED or RESEARCHED OWNING. Doesn't sound like you did any of those... come on man...

I think I would find a different oil change place, if he’s charging that much to eco diesel owners he’s most likely overcharging you on your product

I have that engine in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It will get around 11 to 12 pulling my 23MRB. I did the first oil change at the dealer and it was $190. Way too much but I did get my tires rotated too so. The engine is heavy and I pay a penalty on payload which hurts the towing on the Grand Cherokee. Luckily it just me and the wife so we don’t pack much. The engine pulls great and I have never had any issues with it. I towed through the mountains in the Virginia’s through a pretty good thunderstorm with absolutely no problem.

Payload is going to suffer with the EcoDiesel. Rams already have lower payload, add the weight of the diesel and its going to be bad.
My friend has a 2015 EcoD and his payload is 907lbs. His is a 6 passenger and he has a family of 6. Once his family is loaded up, he has less than 100lbs of payload capacity left.
He tows a 25ft TT and is overloaded. No sure I would want to drive that over loaded.

When I was looking for my truck back in 2014 I looked at the payload for an EcoD on the showroom floor and it was 886. I'm sure they have improved that some - I looked at the door stickers on a 2019 1500 5.7 Hemi last time I had mine in for an oil change. GVWR was 7100 compared to my 2014's 6800. But as Hazman65 said that's a heavy engine, so I think you will find them on the low side of things. Probably not going to provide the payload you would like to have for your situation unless you special order a lower trim level, 2WD and smaller cab configuration.
