Replace Chrome Coating on wheels

The coating on the wheels of our van is deteriorating quickly. I priced having the wheel re-chromed but it is not worth the price. I can almost buy new ones for the price of re-chroming. Has anyone either painted the wheels or applied some type of material that would make the wheels look decent?

Paint usually doesn't stick to chrome very well.

How about an inexpensive hub cap?
