Replaced the shank on my WDH today

I received the new Equalizer 2 1/2" shank to put on my Fastway E2 WDH today and set out to get it all set up. I've never done this before, so I did some homework and watched some installation videos.

The videos I watched said that the bolts have to be tightened to 250 ft. lbs. of torque. Well, I managed to break them loose pretty easily with a 20" breaker bar. They weren't that tight.

I leveled the TT and put tape on the fenders of my new truck and marked the height. 46" on the rear and 42 1/2 on the front. I measured to approximately the top of the inside of the ball receiver and then assembled the hitch with the ball very close to the same height.

I was thinking that the F250 wouldn't drop as much meaning I needed less spring, so I removed a washer, set it all up and lowered the TT onto the ball. The rear dropped 1 inch and the front raised up 7/8". I put the bars on the WDH and lowered it again. That wasn't enough lift, so I disassembled it and added the other washer back in and did it again.

This time the back went up to 45 1/2" and the front was back at 42 1/2", which I think is good. I checked the level on the trailer. The front was at 21 1/2"' and the back was at 23 3/4". Huh?

I spent a few minutes scratching my head trying to figure out what I'd done wrong, but I figured that if I raised the ball mount up one hole (1 1/4") that should be close, so that's what I did.

I ended up with the back end 1/2" low, the front at its normal height and the front of the TT 1/2" lower than the back.

That should do nicely, don't you think?

I agree, sounds pretty good.

Generally the front of the trailer should be lower than the rear. The initial setup sounds like a better option than the raised position.

Give it a test drive and see how it does. I’m surprised by the amount of front rise, all my 3/4 tons had a rise of only 3/16 to 3/8in. with 900-1000lbs tongue weight. Handling wise they liked 40%-50% FALR, any more it just didn’t feel right. Heavier TVs seem to react differently than the lighter ones .

I believe the OP's end result was the front of the TT was 1/2" lower then the rear of the TT...., I believe the OP was referring to the rear of his TV when he stated "I ended up with the back end 1/2" low", (was 46", now 45 1/2").

I do agree a lower TT front is a better condition then a raised one (compared to rear TT height).
