Now, I expect the tongue weight of my trailer will be ~1300 lbs all said and done (2016 Eagle 284BHBE). The truck is a 2012 RAM 2500 diesel Megacab 4x4.

Front Axle: 5240 lbs
GAWR (front) 5500 lbs

Rear Axle: 3660 lbs
GAWR (rear): 6010 lbs

These numbers give me a nice warm fuzzy... I have another 2350 lbs in the rear to handle the ~1300 lbs of tongue weight from the trailer.

However, the GVWR tells a much different story:

Total weight (front & rear Axles): 8900 lbs
GVWR: 9600 lbs

According to this, if I add 1300 lbs tongue weight, I'll be over by 600 lbs.

Should I be worried?
Am I missing the point? The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the amount recommended by the manufacturer as the upper limit to the operational weight for a motor vehicle and any cargo (human or other) to be carried. That said you are not going to carry all the weight in the truck the trailer axle(s) carry weight.

1. It looks like the truck GVWR is 11510 total both axle maximums
2. Your truck as it sets is 8900 on both axles with the load as weighed
3. expected tongue weight 1241 lbs hitch+3660 weighed rear = 4901 still under the rear axle weight
4. 4901 combined rear + 5500 front = 10401 under the 11500 total GVWR
5. You can add 1099lbs to the truck to max the GVWR
Big rigs weigh per axle 12,000 steer, 34,000 drives, 34,000 trailer for 80,000 gross. Same same weighing your rig, no axle is over GAWR and your not over GVWR (gross) so your good to go, no worries.

The manufacturer's GVWR on the door sticker is 9600 lbs.

The GAWRs do not necessarily reflect the capabilities of the truck body and suspension, at least, that's what I think I'm finding out.

If you read further back in the thread, you'll see where I called out that the GAWRs for both the 3500 and 2500 trucks in this model year are identical, yet they have much different GVWRs.

It appears the big difference is the springs in use.

The sticker on the door combined with the actual weights measured on a CAT scale seem to me the more reliable data to be using?

besides, it's the same data in either case: GVWR = 9600 lbs. My CAT scale weight was 8900 lbs, leaving only 700 lbs for the remaining payload. I will overshoot that with a dry empty trailer... we also need to add our stuff, a ProPride hitch (~200 lbs), two Honda EU2000i generators, and a 5 gallon can of gas for the generators.

We will easily be 500 - 600 lbs over GVWR when all is said and done.

Ecksdude, relax take a deep breath and walk away. Much of the information you have found is correct. Many 2500's and 2500's have the same axles and transmissions. The difference in the suspension set ups, that is when dealing with SRA's. DRW's is a whole new game. In the end, IMO you are reading way to much into everything for all the weights and measures.
Your truck will handle your TT with plenty to spare in this case. If you were still rocking the SUV or a 1/2 ton truck then you should be concerned. In this case, you got this. Load it up, hook it up, get yourself out to a campsite (boondock preferred), crack open a cold one and enjoy.

Maybe you should have bought a Ford: 2015 F150 3300 max load and 12,200 max towing. Or one of these under 10K and you'll never max it's load no matter what Jayco you buy. Neighbor pulls his Montana with it, guess they weigh more than Jayco's.

One travels with the fuller load when there may not be spots to refill the fresh water tank or one questions the source's purity, there isn't always a dump-station available at every campground, or you KNOW you're going to consume that propane! However, the concept is right-on, what are some ideas we can contribute that help lighten the load? Not sure of the weight difference but we got nested cookware so there'd be fewer pieces hogging that precious storage space.

That said, I wonder if there is a correlation between CAT scale weight and total dollars spent to outfit the rig?? It'd be interesting to arrive at a "per square foot cost" like they do with building homes!

Well, I got a sneak peak at my actual trailer today. Taking it home on Monday afternoon.

Dry weight on the yellow sticker is 7200 lbs even, with a max cargo of 2050 lbs. Hopefully I'll get some loaded weights on a cat scale on Friday afternoon.

ecksdude, congrats on the new trailer. The 2500 is a class designation, and it is required to be rated at no higher than 10,000 lbs. Before the frame re-design in 2013 (3500)
and 2014 (2500), the ratings were a little lower, not entirely certain why.

The only physical difference with the previous gen Rams is wheel/tire combo and leaf spring capacity. The 2500 was available with smaller wheels that had a lower tire rating, but you could also get larger wheels that had a higher tow rating. The 2500 also came without an overload spring.

I would be most concerned with axle and tire ratings. If you got stopped and weighed, the first thing they would check are those ratings. If you are under those ratings, you are doing okay.

The second thing they would check is what you registered to weigh. If you are registered to 10K lbs, you are doing okay.

As long as you are under your axle weights, under your tire ratings and under your registered weight you are perfectly LEGAL. The ratings from Ram are mostly warranty related, at least on the 3/4 ton series trucks. I'm sure you will be fine and it will tow great!

Wow, I'm impressed!

Historically with Jayco's Published UVW's of the larger Jay Flights & Eagles one could expect a 400lb-700lb delta between Published and Ship Weights (yellow sticker).

The Jayco published UVW of the 2016 284BHBE is 7,015lbs, and your Ship Weight came in at 7,200lbs....., only a 185b delta (that's a good thing).

Look forward to seeing your CAT results.

Bob

Who's going to stop and weigh him? Unless he had commercial tags and a DOT# he'll never be weighed by DOT or anybody else.
