Thumbs down Spare is 16" Rolling wheels are17"

I may be the last person to find this out but discovered the spare on my 2010 Silverado HD 2500 is a 16" wheel while the tires on the truck are 17". Went to my tire guy to buy 1 new tire with instructions to swap the unused spare onto one of the truck wheels and to swap back the best of the old tires onto the spare. He looked and confirmed the 16" vs 17" issue. My rear wheels were showing wear but the fronts are fine. Hoping to only have to buy one new one. Apparantly this is common practice even though the fancy 17" wheels on the truck were what came with the options package for the truck.

So I have a spare that can only be used as a spare for short term emergencies since it is not safe to drive with miss matched wheels like what you had when you had to use one of the donut tires that come with many of the smaller vehicles.

I believe as long as the spare is not designated as a temporary spare with a maximum speed limit on it, you can use it longer than a doughnut. A taller aspect ratio (ie 75 vs 60) listed in the tire size may put the 16" tire the same overall diameter as the 17".

Thanks for the heads up! I'll have to check my spare...I'm sure it's not the same size as the 20" wheel option that my 2500 came with.

my spare on my 2011F250 is an 18 inch wheel and the wheels on truck are 20s not sure about aspect like you said but if the 20 is larger diameter I don't believe it would fit under truck

My 2013 1500 has a 17" spare with 18" wheels on the rest. I questioned the dealer when I had it in for service and they stated GM did that because the 18" would not fit between the frame rails. Yes, it is a full size tire, but is not the same overall diameter as the others wheels and should only be used as a temporary fix to get you off the road and get your original repaired.

I had considered just buying a rim that matches the king ranch used on ebay and installing another tire like the ones I have on truck and just putting it in bed of truck where I can get to it easier anyway, I hate the idea of crawling under truck on side of road

Does anyone know why GM went to the larger wheels? I don't understand, and now especially I don't understand since the spare is a different size; how does the different size spare affect handling and controlling the weight of a fifth wheel? If the spare is for temporary use, that puts people in rural areas towing a trailer in a bind - the closest repair or new tire could be hundreds of miles away.

I suspect GM went with larger rims because that has been the trend for several years now. The aftermarket rim market has been a big influence on large rims...people want to see more rim than tire in the wheel well.

My ?? is why is it always smaller than the rolling wheels? An 18" might not fit between the rails, bit a 17" will but they went with a 16" on my 2010. Seems they always go with the next size down. Does anyone get a spare that is the same size as the rolling wheels?
